| 3 T T Karen Phelps Marine jet propulsion goes electric The EV Maritime - a 150-passenger carbon fibre all-electric passenger ferry for Auckland Transport, HamiltonJet REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Christchurch-based marine propulsion specialist HamiltonJet is positioning itself at the forefront of the industry’s electric revolution, expanding beyond its traditional waterjet expertise to offer comprehensive electrification solutions for the vessels of tomorrow. The company, which has dominated the waterjet market for over 65 years, has significantly broadened its offering over the past five years to include electric motors, high-power electronics, and battery systems alongside its renowned waterjet propulsion units. “While we normally sell our waterjets and controls, we can now sell all the electrical components as well to help customers electrify their boats,” says Ben Reed, managing director of HamiltonJet. Although electrification currently represents a small portion of the business, it exemplifies the company’s vision for marine propulsion’s future. The transformation comes as the maritime industry faces mounting pressure to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2050, with ships contributing approximately 2.2% of global emissions. This year alone, two revolutionary vessels are destined to enter service in Auckland, showcasing the company’s products and capabilities. The first, built by EV Maritime, is a 150-passenger carbon fibre all-electric passenger ferry for Auckland Transport, showcasing the latest, most efficient LTX waterjets. The second is a larger hybrid passenger ferry, likely to serve the Auckland to Devonport route built by Q-West. Ben says this will mean that Auckland will have one of the most modern green fleets of vessels in the world. He says the company’s approach to electrification recognises that there’s no universal solution for marine applications. Its expertise lies in complex system integration, offering everything from fully electric solutions to sophisticated hybrid configurations that combine electric motors with diesel engines. “There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to adding electric drive to marine vessels,” explains Ben. “Trust and confidence in integration partners will ultimately drive the marine industry’s electric revolution. That’s where we come in.” The company’s EHX (electro-hybrid drive) system represents the culmination of decades of waterjet knowledge combined with cutting-edge electric integration expertise. Ben says electric and hybrid technologies are particularly well-suited to waterjet applications. Kiwi PartnershipPowers Global Marine Tech Paynes Aluminium’s partnership with HamiltonJet demonstrates how New Zealand companies can collaborate to compete globally in sophisticated technology markets, says Paynes Aluminium owner Derek Payne. Established in 2004 Paynes Aluminium manufactures all aluminium components for HamiltonJet's internationally renowned marine propulsion units, from precision screen bar extrusions to complex transition kits and reverse ducts. Derek says the partnership showcases New Zealand manufacturing excellence on the global stage, with HamiltonJet's systems now leading vessel autonomy solutions alongside traditional propulsion technology. Derek says that the collaboration demands exacting standards: "We work directly from HamiltonJet's design engineers' speci ications, maintaining their quality control and manufacturing practices throughout our process," he explains. Paynes Aluminium imports its own aluminium sheets and plates, holding large stockpiles throughout New Zealand, and develops custom extrusion dies at competitive costs. The company's two large CNC manufacturing plants produce components using special alloys in varying thicknesses, all certi ied to DNV and ABS maritime standards with full mill certi icates. "HamiltonJet’s drawings are interpreted and manufactured by us using special alloys in all varying thicknesses," explains Derek. "Everything is CNC produced and weld-prepped to exact speci ications before being assembled into kits at our Mosgiel factory. The components then head to HamiltonJet's Lunns Road premises for inal welding and assembly where they become integral parts of waterjet units exported worldwide." Since its founding Paynes Aluminium has expanded across New Zealand, opening branches in Christchurch in 2014 and extending into the North Island with facilities in Tauranga and Auckland by late 2015.
