Denos Towing Service CONTRACTING In its 32 years in business, Deno’s Towing Service has seen it all. The truly family-owned-and-operated business based in Rolleston outside of Christchurch, which has been operating since early 1993, is a 24/7 vehicle recovery business. They also carry out impoundments and machine recovery, attend accidents and breakdowns, and provide insurance vehicle recovery and pilot vehicle and traffic management services. They also tow smaller vehicles and machinery and partner with BTR International and Tow Works doing the heavy haulage. Deno’s covers the whole of the Selwyn District, and works alongside the police and fire and emergency. It also recently obtained an AMI Roadside contract. The line of work has meant attending all sorts of jobs over the years, from vehicles down banks to vehicles that have gone through houses and shop fronts, owner Dean Franklin says. “We have had a lot of interesting jobs over the time, and seen a lot of things that we would rather have not, but that’s part of the job,” Dean says. “We get to meet a lot of people on their worst day, and a lot of good people as well. The most rewarding part of the job is helping people in need and the people we work alongside. “There are some things you wish you didn’t see, but unfortunately that is the nature of the job, and it is what we need to do to help people in their time of need. Working with people who have years of towing experience helps in a stressful situation – all scenarios are dealt with in a professional and friendly manner.” The variety of the work keeps it interesting for the team, he says. “We enjoy what we do, as there is never two days the same.” Dean and wife Yvonne have taken a step back to enjoy retirement and their grandchildren, with daughters Ashleigh and Melissa running the company. Ashleigh’s fiancé Mike is a truck driver for the company, as is Melissa’s husband Lewis, and Richard is the third truck driver. While Deno’s carries out the smaller stuff, it also ties in with BTR International and Tow Works that handle the “big stuff with their big toys”, Dean says. As the saying goes, we can handle anything between us with the experience we have between the three companies, and with the gear we all have and the knowledge, we can out-perform anyone.” Dean and Yvonne started the company as a one-man-band with one hook truck. This has grown to a team of five staff, five slide deck trucks and a Hiab truck, and an AMI roadside rescue ute. The business operates out of a purpose-built storage/office unit that is totally undercover to protect clients’ damaged vehicles and personal property while in the company’s care.
