More than 70 years after the Van Den Brink family established the business in New Zealand, Brink’s Chicken remains the country’s only family-owned poultry processor operating at a national scale. The company employs about 500 sta and supplies retail, foodservice and manufacturing customers across New Zealand, with operations spanning both the North and South islands. Brink’s is New Zealand’s third-largest poultry producer, processing millions of chickens annually while supplying fresh and frozen chicken products nationwide. Sales Operations Manager Norman Wanhalla says the business has continued focusing on reliability, customer relationships and making the most of every part of the chicken. Alongside supplying chicken products into supermarkets, restaurants and manufacturing channels, Brink’s also produces protein ingredients for the pet food industry through its processing system. As a predominantly dividing plant, it separates chickens into individual cuts, with remaining frames and other by-products then further processed into pet food ingredients rather than being wasted. This complements the wider business model by helping maximise utilisation of the whole chicken while supplying a valuable protein source into New Zealand’s growing pet food sector. Across New Zealand’s pet food industry, chicken by-products such as frames and organ meat are widely used in raw and processed pet food because of their high protein content, a ordability and local sourcing. The sector has become an increasingly important complementary market for poultry processors seeking to maximise value from production. Brink’s also continues seeing steady demand growth for chicken products in supermarkets, especially because of the signi cant increase in the cost of red meat. “It’s the most a ordable protein you can get; it’s extremely good value,” Alan says. The company competes in a highly concentrated poultry industry alongside larger multinational-backed businesses, but Brink’s family ownership remains a signi cant point of di erence. “It’s de nitely a bene t having a family-owned business. We’re much more in tune to what our sta do. We do little things like Easter gifts and random gifts throughout the year to support them as much as we can.” Brink’s supplies a broad customer base comprising supermarkets, foodservice operators, restaurants and manufacturers nationwide, with maintaining strong relationships and consistent supply central to the business. “We don’t want to be number one, but we want to be a very good competitor that meets the market and becomes a preferred supplier to a lot of our local customers,” he says. Like many large-scale food manufacturers, the company continues navigating sta ng pressures while investing in production planning, bird welfare and growing environments to meet increasing demand across New Zealand.
