| 3 T TKim Bowden Recognition for visionary winemaker Rudi Bauer: “My vision is to bring the vineyard into your wine glass.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Quartz Reef Wines Bendigo wine pioneer, Rudi Bauer, has been named New Zealand Vigneron of the Year, capping a string of national accolades for Quartz Reef Wines and highlighting the growing prominence of organic winegrowing in Central Otago. The award recognises a contribution to both viticulture and winemaking – the growing of grapes and the creation of wine – a combination Rudi says allows for a single vision from vineyard to bottle. Rudi founded Quartz Reef Wines in 1996, and the recognition comes alongside a strong run of awards for the Bendigo estate, including being ranked among The Real Review’s top five wineries for 2026, and being named Sustainable Vineyard of the Year at the Aotearoa New Zealand Organic Wine Awards. Quartz Reef Méthode Traditionnelle Vintage Blanc de Blancs 2019 was also awarded Champion Sparkling at the organic wine awards, while five other Quartz Reef wines received gold medals. For Rudi, the Vigneron of the Year award reflects the relationship between the land and the wine produced from it. “My vision is to bring the vineyard into your wine glass.” He says having responsibility for both vineyard management and winemaking allows decisions to be made with the whole process in mind. “You don’t have to argue except with yourself,” he says. The role involves constantly moving between the vineyard and winery, with the aim of capturing the character of Bendigo in the glass. Quartz Reef’s approach has long centred on organic and biodynamic farming, with the estate certified Demeter biodynamic and BioGro organic. Rudi says sustainability is about caring for land that would outlast them. “You have only a very short role to play to be the custodian of a land, and the most important part is that you pass it on in better shape to the next generation,” he says. While the awards celebrated the wines already produced, work continued in the vineyard, with the Quartz Reef team undertaking its annual winter pruning programme, a 10-week process that lays the foundation for the next growing season. The recognitions come as Central Otago’s organic wine sector continues to grow. At the Aotearoa New Zealand Organic Wine Awards, 11 Central Otago wineries collected 73 of the 181 medals awarded, representing about 40% of the national total. Central Otago Winegrowers Association general manager, Carolyn Murray, says the region’s success reflected a wider commitment from growers, with roughly 30% of Central Otago’s vineyard area now under organic management. “Central Otago has become New Zealand’s leading organic wine region,” she says. “This achievement reflects the commitment of growers who believe that great wine begins in the vineyard – with healthy soils, balanced ecosystems, and a deep respect for the land.” For Rudi, the awards are recognition of a long-term approach, rather than an end point. He says the region’s strength comes from growers working together, and from the natural advantages of its climate, land and suitability for varieties such as pinot noir. At Quartz Reef, he describes their work as just the beginning of a longer story of understanding their Bendigo site. “We don’t know yet what is the real uniqueness of the site, because our vineyards and our experience is still too short – the next generations will know,” he says.
