Commitments to quality and reliability combined with a focus on innovation and positive client relationships have driven growth for the business. Founders Les and Kathy Mitchell launched Smartweld with complementary skills: Les had a background in boiler making and the fitter/ turner trade, while Kathy’s was in IT. Under their leadership, Smartweld has evolved into a well-respected, customer-focused company servicing a wide range of requirements. The skilled team works closely with local industries to design and fabricate exactly what they need. Smartweld’s extensive suite of services includes engineering, commercial fabrication, CNC laser cutting, custom manufacturing, CAD design and spring making. Smartweld’s investment in a new base of operations north of the city at Swannanoa, which came out of the pandemic, proved to be a strategic decision. “It opened up more space for efficiency,” says production manager, Corey Cooke. “Where we were before was a bit cramped, whereas now we have a larger floor plan that enables a much better workflow.” Smartweld has diversified its services through the years, and invested in the best equipment to support on-time project delivery and meticulous quality. The company is a step ahead in Canterbury when it comes to fast and efficient laser-cutting services. “To my knowledge, our advanced laser cutting equipment is by far the most powerful and quickest in the region,” says Corey. “It means we can cut thicker sheets of steel at a faster rate, while maintaining exceptional quality. In turn, that significantly reduces costs and lead times for our clients.” Smartweld is a nimble operator and has been adept at responding to niche market needs, with. spring-making a good example of this. A go-to specialist in this area, the company designs, manufactures and supplies replacement, high-quality garage door springs for both residential and commercial applications throughout New Zealand. The Smartweld name is well-known in Christchurch and Canterbury, particularly in the construction, industrial engineering and agricultural sectors, for quality products and services. “We’re particularly excited right now to have our SmartPost range of galvanized steel fence posts back in production and available for our rural communities,” Corey says. “As well as being durable, SmartPosts provide a much faster method of farm fencing that can be installed very quickly compared to current methods. Whether it’s for a small paddock or a large-scale fencing job, these are an ideal choice and price-competitive in today’s market.” Corey says SmartPosts will last much longer than some of the poorly coated imported product coming into the country. Over 10,000 SmartPosts have been sold to date. With the simple locking system and wire droppers, SmartPosts are easy to install, and farmers have been quick to notice how much they are saving on labour by choosing this option. Smartweld is proud of the glowing online reviews it attracts as a result of excellent customer service and high standards on quality assurance. At its 20th year in business milestone, the outlook ahead for the Smartweld team is looking very positive.
