They are very focused on the quality of the building and easy to work with,” says Allan. Shanahan Architects, based in Ponsonby, Auckland, has been operating since 1991. Founded by Allan, who has nearly 40 years of experience in the sector, it specialises in high-end residential and development projects, employing a team of seven, including design professionals, draftspersons and an interior designer. Its work extends across Auckland and internationally, covering homes, townhouses, apartments and larger developments. “We have specialised in upper-end development projects,” says Allan. ”We are very strong technically and have a long track record and wide experience in upper-end development,” says Allan. Among its landmark projects are the first 50 houses at Jack’s Point, Queenstown, for Fletcher Living. “In terms of the aesthetic theme of Jack’s Point, we set the precedent for the area, using gable roofs, stonework, cedar, copper and shingles to give a natural, South Island feel,” explains Allan. The practice also completed Kensington Park in Orewa, a mid-rise apartment development with a seaside character. “Other architects started the project and established the theme. “Our client took over, and we carried on with traditional painted weatherboards, pergolas and balconies to give an indoor-outdoor, relaxed beachside feel,” he says.
