The project is a seamless blend of old and new, with each element designed for modern family living. Now complete, the extensive renovation and extension project has transformed the original home into a contemporary residence, while carefully protecting the timeless character of the existing property. The project, led by Garry Morton, of Cromwell Building Contractors, features a 260sqm two-storey extension, added to the original 280sqm home. “A seamless blend of old and new, this Bannockburn home has been thoughtfully transformed to deliver modern living with a timeless character,” says Garry. He says the extension creates generous open plan living and a sheltered indoor-outdoor connection. The owners envisioned a welcoming home where family and friends could gather comfortably, while also incorporating separate spaces that allow guests to enjoy privacy without feeling disconnected from the main home. Garry says a strong architectural design, combined with a passionate building team helped bring their vision to life. One of the most challenging aspects of the build was ensuring the new extension matched the original home seamlessly. Keeping the new to match the old and creating seamless lines through new ceilings and verandahs were among the challenges, he says. Another challenge that took a lot of care and attention was ensuring the stonework matched to make it “look like it’s always been there”. Among the standout features of the renovation are the timber tongue and groove ceilings that flow both inside and outside the home, along with expansive verandahs and decking that run alongside the extension. Like many renovation projects, the build also uncovered unexpected challenges during the construction. The team had to remodel part of the existing kitchen and lounge areas to strengthen and brace the original structure, work which Garry describes as “quite challenging”, but resulted in a “great outcome”. He says it is now a contemporary home that has been modernised to suit the owner’s needs. “[It] has a real wow factor when you pull up outside and even more so when you enter into the new kitchen/dining area.” With 45 years in the building sector, Garry says renovations and extensions continue to be a major focus for the business and, as a result, no two projects are ever the same. He says every renovation has its own challenges. “It means you have to think 10 steps ahead and use your building skills to make things work.” Garry says seeing satisfied clients at the completion of a project remains one of the most rewarding aspects of his job. “Knowing that the owners are happy with the end result is a massive plus.” Looking ahead, he says the team plans to continue specialising in renovations and extensions across Central Otago, with his son Codee now sharing the same passion for challenging and creative building work. He says they “enjoy the challenge of thinking outside the square” and will continue on the same path they are on at the moment, to “work hard and enjoy life”.
