Led by director Steve Marshall, the company has become known throughout the Nelson Tasman region for its ability to think outside the box and solve complex building challenges. “We have a fantastic team, and we enjoy taking on projects that challenge us,” says Steve. “We also love delivering high-end work where we can really showcase our skills and experience.” At the core of every project is a commitment to transparency and trust. “We build everything on honest advice,” Steve says. “We’ll tell clients exactly what we think, explain the options available, and then let them make the decision that’s right for them. “At the end of the day, building or renovating a home is a major investment. We want our clients to look back and feel confident they made the right decisions and that we’ve delivered a result they’ll be proud of for years to come.” One of the ways Marshall Builders helps achieve the best possible outcomes is by becoming involved early in the design process. Working closely with architects allows the team to provide practical construction advice, drawing on years of hands-on experience. “That allows us to contribute practical building knowledge and help ensure the project achieves the best possible outcome.” While the Nelson Tasman region continues to attract homeowners and investors, Steve has noticed more caution with spending in the market due to rising construction costs. “People are being a bit more careful with their budgets at the moment,” he says. However, demand remains steady for quality projects, particularly in the premium market. “The higher-end market has remained relatively stable because it’s less affected by broader market fluctuations.” Regardless of project size, Marshall Builders remains committed to taking on work that requires creative thinking and problem-solving. “We’re often drawn to projects that are technically challenging or require a different way of thinking,” says Steve. “Our ability to problem-solve and think outside the box is something our clients really value. When you combine that with experience, it allows us to tackle projects that might be considered too difficult or too technical by others.” Roofing is one area where the company has developed specialist expertise, and the company is a certified VELUX skylight installer. This allows the team to manage the installation process themselves rather than relying on additional subcontractors. “Being certified means we’re not simply bringing in another subcontractor to handle that part of the project. It’s something we manage ourselves, which helps streamline the process and gives clients peace of mind.” Marshall Builders was established in 2010 while Steve was still completing his apprenticeship. After moving to Nelson in 2012, he began taking on his own projects while continuing contract work and steadily growing the business. “I started doing some work independently alongside contracting and gradually built the business from there,” he says. Today, Marshall Builders employs seven staff, including Steve, and takes pride in maintaining a highly-skilled workforce. Every full-time builder on the team is fully qualified. “Having a strong team is incredibly important to us. We’re committed to training people, supporting their development, and creating an environment where they want to stay. “I’m very blessed to have the team I do. They’re a huge part of what makes the business successful.” As the business continues to grow, Steve remains focused on improving systems, investing in staff development, and maintaining the strong family culture that has helped shape the company. Several exciting projects are underway, including a major hillside home overlooking Port Nelson that involves adding a third storey to an existing two-storey property. “It’s going to be an incredible project — very challenging, but also incredibly rewarding.” The team is also completing a substantial villa renovation after extensive flood damage, involving lifting the home, extending it, and carrying out a full refurbishment. In addition, work is about to begin on a new architectural spec home, and the company is looking to expand its team as demand continues to grow.
