T T Kelly Deeks Having an impact across the Waitaki BW Building has grown steadily on the back of complex projects that require a mix of traditional craftsmanship and modern construction capability. BW Building owner-operator Ben Warren has built a diverse construction business based in Kurow and servicing the wider Waitaki region delivering residential, rural, and specialist building work ranging from heritage renovations to modern new builds and large structural projects. The company has grown steadily on the back of complex projects that require a mix of traditional craftsmanship and modern construction capability, with Ben saying the variety of work is what keeps the business moving forward. He says BW Building’s steady reputation growth has been central to the company’s progress, with repeat clients and local referrals driving much of its workload across the Waitaki district. He adds that maintaining hands-on involvement in each project remains a priority, ensuring consistency from concept through to completion while keeping strong relationships with clients and local subcontractors. One of the standout projects for BW Building was its work on Walnut Cottage at Station Peak in the Waitaki Valley, which featured on Grand Designs New Zealand. The project involved the restoration of an 1860s L shaped stone cottage, a careful renovation balancing heritage preservation with modern living. Ben says the team focused on retaining the original stone structure while integrating new living spaces including an addition and finishing interiors in high quality hardwoods. “Our customers want practical, durable homes suited to local conditions,” For a log home project, Ben and his team managed the on-site build process before and after the log shells arrived, including foundations, slab preparation, framing, and final finishing. He says installation was intensive with the log specialists on site for a short period before BW Building completed the interior work to deliver the finished home. BW Building is now working on a large relocation home brought from Christchurch which is being carefully dismantled, transported, and reassembled in the Waitaki district. The project reflects the company’s capability in handling complex structural rebuilds where accuracy and sequencing are critical to ensuring the home is successfully reinstated. Beyond larger builds, BW Building carries out a steady stream of residential work including kitchen and bathroom renovations, decks, and sheds, providing a full service offering for rural and urban clients across the region. “None of these projects would be possible without the hard work and skill of our team,” Ben says. Ben began his building career as an apprentice in 2009 before moving into subcontracting roles with established builders in the region. He established BW Building in the late 2010s as demand increased. He says the Station Peak project marked a major turning point for the business, bringing wider recognition and leading to increased workload and larger scale opportunities. Since then, BW Building has grown from a sole operator to a small crew supported by trusted subcontractors and other local independent building companies, allowing BW Building to take on large and multiple projects without compromising quality. Ben says collaboration with local trades has been key to managing workload and delivering larger builds while keeping the business flexible. Ben says BW Building is focused on continuing to strengthen its presence across Waitaki region while remaining selective about the projects it takes on.
