For Blenheim builder Callan Hendriks, restoring heritage homes is more than just construction work: it’s about preserving the character and craftsmanship of a bygone era while bringing these homes up to modern living standards. As Managing Director and Head Carpenter of Black Stag Build, Callan leads a small, highly skilled team specialising in villa and heritage restoration throughout Marlborough. “While we undertake new builds, renovations, extensions and outdoor projects, heritage restoration is what we’re most passionate about,” says Callan. “There’s much more involved than simply replacing weatherboards, piles or window frames. The challenge is preserving the original character of a building while integrating modern building science and technology to improve comfort, efficiency and longevity.” Many of Marlborough’s historic villas and bungalows were built long before modern insulation, building wraps and heating systems existed. Black Stag Build works closely with homeowners to sensitively upgrade these homes while maintaining their original appearance. That can include full interior refurbishments, insulation retrofits, structural strengthening, custom-made double-glazed timber windows, and modern heating solutions designed to improve year-round comfort without compromising heritage features. “When restoring a heritage home, every detail matters,” Callan says. “Often replacement components need to look identical to the originals, particularly on heritage-listed properties. The goal is for the improvements to be virtually invisible while dramatically improving how the home performs.” The company is currently restoring a villa in the Wairau Valley that dates back to the early 1900s. Originally built in central Blenheim before being relocated to the valley in the late 1950s, the 125sqm home is undergoing a comprehensive six-month restoration, including a new kitchen and bathroom. “It’s incredibly rewarding work,” Callan says. “These homes have stood for more than a century, and with the right approach they’ll continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.” While heritage projects are a specialty, Black Stag Build undertakes a wide range of residential and light commercial work throughout the region. Over the past decade the company has completed around 30 new homes, along with numerous renovations, extensions and outdoor living projects. The team regularly works across Marlborough, including Blenheim, Picton and the wider region, with Callan happy to travel where the project demands. Black Stag Build remains intentionally small, comprising Callan and two other qualified tradespeople. “We like being hands-on and maintaining complete control over the quality of our work,” he says. “Our reputation is built on craftsmanship, attention to detail and delivering a high standard on every project.”
