Alpine Group Construction T T Kim Bowden BUILDING Alpine Group Construction has built its reputation on staying organised, communicating clearly and understanding the demanding ground conditions that come with building in and around Queenstown. Directors Sam Shefford and Shane Johnstone founded the business in 2012 after meeting on a job site years earlier. “We worked together, got on well, and it kind of grew from there,” Sam says. Both men are long-time locals with decades in the industry. Shane began his career as a joiner in the late 1980s, while Sam came through the building trade, each working their way up to site management before launching the company. Today, they remain hands-on leaders, working directly on every build alongside a small crew of tradesmen and apprentices. Many on the team have come through the business from the ground up. “There’s a couple of them in foreman roles now,” Sam says proudly. That close-knit culture extends beyond the job. “On a Friday, we often go golfing,” Sam says. “Outside work, we still get on very well as just guys away from the building site.” In a small team, he adds, cohesion is essential. “Everyone’s got to get on, or else the crew just doesn’t function properly.” Alpine Group Construction works across both residential and commercial projects, roughly a 50/50 split. Their portfolio ranges from bar and restaurant fit outs to bespoke homes across the Whakatipu Basin. Queenstown’s terrain brings no shortage of complexity — steep sections, tight access, weather shifts and even natural springs appearing after heavy rain. “It’s all about how you’re organised,” Sam says. “If you’re organised, most challenges can be overcome.” Local knowledge also counts. “You kind of know what works up here and what doesn’t… there’s certain deckings you wouldn’t use, certain weatherboards you wouldn’t use, just because of the climate.” Regular meetings with clients and architects keep projects moving and help identify solutions to problems early. “We try and tee up meetings weekly; that’s the only way to make sure everyone’s on the same page,” Sam says. It’s also where value engineering comes in. “Sometimes there’s a better or cheaper way to do things,” Sam says. “We try and help clients in that way.” Another cornerstone of the business is its long-standing subcontractor relationships, and many have worked with the directors for decades. “You can’t build without good subcontractors,” Sam says. “They know what we expect, and we know what they bring to the table.” Recent work includes a two-year architectural home on Robins Road designed by Crosson Architects, along with commercial projects including hospitality venues The Irishman, Sunfire, and Soda, as well as Queenstown Medical and a childcare centre in Jack’s Point. Looking ahead, Sam says they’re comfortable with their current pace, and they’ll “keep on keeping on”, staying local, staying handson and continuing to take on the complex builds that have defined their work for more than a decade in the basin.
