Now, 11 years on, that vision has grown into a respected Southland-based enterprise, and this year earned national recognition when Shahn took home the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Award at the KUMA Māori Business Awards 2025. The accolade marks a proud milestone for Shahn and the team, a moment that reflects years of dedication, hard work, and commitment to the building sector. “To be recognised by our iwi is deeply meaningful, and reinforces the values that guide who we are and what we do,” says Shahn. “This achievement is not only a proud moment for Bragg Building & Design as a Māoriowned business, but also a reminder to others that anything is possible when you put your head down and do the mahi,” he says. “It shows that with dedication, integrity, and a strong connection to your roots, you can achieve great things while giving back to your community.” Shahn was working at the NZAS Aluminium Smelter when he, alongside Lorenna, set up Bragg Building & Design in September 2014. He was balancing family life, shift work, and an ever-growing demand as a local builder at the time. T T to page 104 The shift work was demanding, and time away from the smelter was used to take on building projects, including bathroom and kitchen renovations, window installations, and other residential improvements. However, his passion for building was “too strong to ignore”, so in 2018 he decided to leave the smelter so he could focus on his business full-time. Since then, Bragg Building & Design has become known for its integrity, reliability, and hands-on approach. “For me, success in business is about being honest, reliable and upfront – always telling it how it is and giving genuine, practical advice,” Shahn says. “I believe these qualities build trust and strong relationships with our clients.
