Dimension Construction T T Kelly Deeks BUILDING Christchurch’s Dimension Construction has put the finishing touches on an energy-efficient new home in Casebrook, built to passive house standards using Formance structural insulated panels (SIPs), and demonstrating the company’s growing expertise in high-performance construction and energy-efficient building practices. Dimension Construction owner Nikhil Dayaram says the build is now in its final stages, with driveways, landscaping, and interior fitout almost complete. Despite a few weather-related issues, the project progressed smoothly, thanks to the SIPs (structural insulated panels) construction method. “We had a wet start to the year, which made getting the panels up and keeping them dry challenging,” Nikhil says. “But we were lucky to have the structure near completion by the time those strong winds came through. The SIPs made it easy to get the building airtight, and our blower door test came in at 0.38, well below the 0.6 required for passive house standards.” The home also features triple air-sealed European PVC windows from Polish manufacturer Koffmans. Nikhil says these imported windows offer outstanding performance and value. “It’s probably one of the best window suites in terms of PVC and glazing,” he says. “While we prefer to support local where we can, our clients want the option of these high-performing, cost-effective windows, and they really contribute to the home’s airtightness and thermal performance.” Dimension Construction has been promoting the use of SIPs for several years, as more New Zealanders begin to recognise the benefits of energy-efficient building. “A lot more people are starting to hear about SIPs, and demand is increasing,” Nikhil says. “They’re a great option for building airtight, comfortable, and efficient homes.” Inside, the Casebrook home combines simplicity with touches of craftsmanship that Nikhil says the team enjoyed bringing to life. “The majority of the house is quite straightforward, but the client added some recessed coffer ceiling details, which were a nice piece of detail for the guys to build,” he says. “We don’t get to see a lot of that sort of detailing these days, and it can make a really big impact.” Nikhil believes good communication between builder, client, and architect is critical to overcoming the inevitable challenges of a project. “There are always challenges that come up throughout the build,” he says. “The relationship between everyone involved – the builder, the client, and the architect – is really important. “We aim to deliver on the plans and create the client’s vision to a high standard.” Established in 2018, Dimension Construction has built a reputation in Canterbury for its quality workmanship, precision detailing, and focus on sustainable building practices.
