These medium- and low-voltage cables will distribute power from the zone substation to local networks, ultimately delivering electricity to homes and businesses throughout Rolleston, as it expands. While the cables have been installed, termination work has not yet been completed. “This job has involved trench and traffic management, coordination with Orion’s Project Engagement lead, and communication with community stakeholders,” says Jim. “The main work has been outside a primary school and affecting access to a busy preschool,” he says. The project’s next major phase involves the 66/11/400V fitout of equipment and the livening of the new substation, which is scheduled to fully commence in 2026. This phase will see the installation of transformers, switchgear and other critical electrical equipment that will enable the substation to step down voltage levels and distribute power safely throughout the local network. “The livening phase in 2026 will be a significant milestone,” says Jim. “This is when we’ll energise the substation and bring it into full operation, providing the reliable power supply that residents and businesses need.” Connetics operates as the commercial arm of The Orion Group, which is owned by Christchurch City Holdings Limited — the investment and commercial arm of Christchurch City Council and Selwyn District Council. The company’s purpose is to invest in and promote the sustainability of key infrastructure in Christchurch and surrounding areas. The company is structured around three complementary business units: Contracting, Supply and Logistics, and Design and Engineering. With depots in Wellington and Christchurch, and warehouses across the country, it has the resources and expertise to deliver complex infrastructure projects like the West Rolleston Zone Station. Jim says the company’s working principles — working together, finding solutions, innovating, adapting and remaining open — have also been essential in managing the technical complexities of the West Rolleston project. He says the Rolleston Zone Substation project is part of a broader strategy by The Orion Group to respond to challenges facing the energy sector. “Recognising we are in the midst of radical disruption in the energy sector and due to the climate change crisis, we challenged ourselves to consider how we need to adapt and remain relevant,” says Jim. “This adaptation includes ensuring infrastructure can support both current electricity demands and future developments in how energy is generated and consumed. “As more renewable energy sources come online and electric vehicle adoption increases, zone substations like West Rolleston will play a crucial role in managing power distribution. “Delivering energy solutions to power a cleaner and brighter future for Aotearoa encapsulates our purpose within The Orion Group Strategy.” He says for Rolleston residents, the zone substation represents essential infrastructure that will support the community’s continued growth. “The phased approach to the project ensures that work can progress systematically alongside maintaining safety and quality standards. With the 2026 timeline for full commissioning, Rolleston will soon have the modern, robust electrical infrastructure needed to support its expanding population and contribute to Canterbury’s ongoing development.” Proudly supporting Connetics Phone 03 353 5900 www.deemacservices.co.nz SERVICES INCLUDE: General cleaning Grounds maintenance Window cleaning Pressure washing Carpet & upholstery Builders cleans 03 383 6262 www.asphaltrepairs.co.nz smallholesealers A S P H A L T R E P A I R S Proudly supporting Connetics with all their asphalting needs for over 15 years
