Over the past 30 years, owner David Larkin and his team have seen it all, fixing and servicing everything from cars, boats, jet skis, jet boats and trailers to farm machinery, lawn mowers and chainsaws. Lake Brunner is also the place to go for WOF on trailers, motorbikes and cars. A born and bred local, David grew up in a farming family in nearby Rotomanu. Farm machinery was of more interest to David than farm animals. With a natural aptitude for all things mechanical, he went on to complete a fitter turner apprenticeship in Nelson after leaving school. In 1995, having spotted a tempting business opportunity close to home, he bought Moana’s local automotive workshop, dairy and fuel pumps. Demand for marine and engineering services quickly snowballed, leading to the addition of new workshop space for engineering and marine work in 2000. In 2019, the original parts of the business were sold off to support further expansion in engineering and marine services. “We then bought back the automotive business in December 2023,” says David. “Our goals have always been about supporting the community with the best service we can.” The automotive, marine and engineering workshops are right next to each other. There’s a tyre bay for fixing punctures and an array of practical gear in the workshops from hoists to lathes and welding equipment. While these are specialist spaces, the team works collaboratively to help each other out as needed. Lake Brunner Marine & Engineering & Automotive is a Mercury service agent, a Suzuki dealer and service agent, as well as a UBCO dealer and service agent for UBCO electric bikes, (a great option for the bush or on the farm).
