T T Bernadette Cooney CONTRACTING Professional Electrics Ltd (Prolec) is celebrating a proud moment in its apprenticeship programme, with third-year industrial apprentice Joshua Bryant earning second place in this year’s regional Master Electrician Awards. The result reflects both Joshua’s hard work and the strength of Prolec’s long-standing apprenticeship pathway – something the locally owned company relies on as it continues to grow. Prolec’s business manager Shanae Thomas says Joshua’s achievement shows what’s possible when motivated people get the right support. “Joshua has a great mindset, and it’s been rewarding to see him succeed. He represents what can be achieved with the right attitude and support,” she says. Electrical service supervisor Isaac Eaton, who has been with Prolec for 12 years, has supported Joshua throughout his training, with apprentices forming a key part of Prolec’s future. “Our future workforce is built through strong apprenticeship development,” Shanae says. Prolec currently has six apprentices, and more than a dozen qualified industrial electricians. With some long-serving team members approaching retirement, the company sees developing new talent as essential. “We’re looking to grow,” says Shanae. “If you’re willing to learn and bring the right attitude, we can teach you the rest.” Based in Middleton, Christchurch, and working nationwide, Prolec was formed in 1992 through the merger of several established Canterbury electrical firms. Later Growth, including the acquisition of Norm Smith Electric Ltd, added a switchboard construction facility and strengthened its capability in industrial work. Today, the company provides a wide range of industrial electrical services, including project delivery, automation, programming, control system design, switchboard and panel construction, machine safety, and electrical servicing. Its team includes software engineers (PLC, HMI and SCADA), industrial servicemen, project tradesmen, and boiler electricalspecialists. Prolec supports customers across sectors such as food production and product manufacturing, handling everything from small breakdowns to complete turnkey builds. Prolec also helps businesses stay compliant and safe, offering infrared testing, portable appliance testing, machine safety assessments, and 24/7 breakdown support. “We encourage businesses to think proactively, not reactively, when it comes to machine safety,” says Shanae. The company employs more than 30 electrical professionals, and works closely with suppliers including Radcliffe Electrical, Schneider, Siemens and Rockwell Automation.
