Attika is building a two-storey office and warehouse base for its expanding operations, and Morris Waddell Electrical is wiring it from the ground up. “We’re managing everything on this large commercial build – lighting, power, data, CCTV – the full package,” says company manager Logan Cunningham. “It’s a significant build, and a great example of the large-scale commercial work we’re trusted to deliver.” Other recent notable completions include the Mitre 10 Timaru extension, a new farm source for Fonterra in Waimate, and a complex leachate treatment plant for Canterbury Enviro Solutions, set deep in a repurposed quarry. The team designed and powered the remote pumping systems, weighbridge and control infrastructure that keep the site running. “This is an old lime quarry lined with poly liner and rocks at the bottom to screen contaminants. We’ve put pumps in the bottom, and they pump water up to the tanks, which then gets pumped over the hillside, which evaporates the leachate water,” Logan explains. Morris Waddell Electrical set up power and all site infrastructure for new three-phase 400amp power supply to the hillside to run pumps and weigh stations. “We do a fair bit of rural industrial-type design and installs, including dairy sheds andirrigation systems. Also, light automation and programming,” says Logan. “We have in-house specialists across a variety of projects throughout South Canterbury and Mackenzie and Lake districts.” From residential electrical to commercial and industrial design, install and servicing, plus 24-hour breakdown and emergency service, Morris Waddell Electrical provides a full service. They also specialise in solar electrical work for the commercial and residential sectors. “We provide a quality solar electrical skill set for commercial buildings, and off-grid and hybrid systems for agriculture, and in the residential new-build and renovation space, including smart home integration and EV chargers for home and commercial EV fleets.” EV charger technology is evolving rapidly. “Solar being integrated into our homes or businesses is becoming a real focus for us,” Logan adds. “This shift in electrification at work and at home and increase in power costs means customers are looking for ways to save money long-term, and we can design systems that provide just that. “Eventually you’ll be able to run your home off your EV car battery via a bi-directional charger, which would work alongside your solar batteries to run your home, or potentially sell excess to the grid for a profit during peak times.” The company also maintains key service contracts with Kāinga Ora, plus contracts for Otis Elevators, supporting lift systems throughout South Canterbury. This is alongside long-time clients in key parts of the industry, including McCains Foods, Southern Packers, Temuka Transport, Timaru District Council, NZ Insulators and many more loyal clients. Founded by Morris Waddell before being registered as a business in 1973, the company was bought by Bevan Cunningham in 1983 and remains a family-run operation, in conjunction with Bevan’s son Logan.
