JOINERY Sydenham Bespoke Joinery played a major role in this year’s Canterbury Master Builders Awards, supplying joinery to five of the six major category winners, including the Regional Supreme House of the Year Over $1million. This stunning Redcliffs home by Steve Brown Builders also took home awards for Interior Design and Kitchen Excellence, testament to the company’s centre stage craftsmanship. Built for clients returning to the area following the 2011 earthquakes, the Redcliffs residence embodies permanence and place. Anchored into the hillside, it steps with the land, its clean lines and natural materials echoing the coastal contours. Timber, stone, concrete, and steel flow seamlessly through the interior and exterior - a reflection of the collaborative architectural vision from designer to builder and contractors. “We handled all the joinery in that home — cabinetry, solid timber, exterior shutters, plus we work in with the architectural steelwork,” says Grant Weston, co-owner and director of Sydenham Bespoke Joinery. “It’s a project that really shows what we can do when craftsmanship and design ambition come together.” “The fact that five of the six top category winners used our joinery says a lot and shows the level of attention to detail and the long-term relationships we’ve built with Canterbury’s leading builders and architects. Since taking ownership in 2016, Grant and co-owner Richard Jones, who had both worked for Sydenham Joinery for many years, set about investing heavily in technology and design capability. Today, from its modern facility behind The Tannery in Heathcote, Sydenham Bespoke Joinery employs a team of 25. Its in-house designers, draftsmen and craftsmen deliver everything from bespoke kitchens and staircases to timber windows and collaborate with architectural steelworkers, to service residential and commercial projects across the South Island.
