Invision Project Consulting T T Virginia Wright REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT John and Jan Langeveld established Invision Project Consulting in Invercargill in 2018, and it’s been growing ever since. John had been a builder for years before moving into project management which is the company’s focus, particularly in the education sector, along with pre-purchase property inspections, Healthy Homes inspections, smoke alarm testing and meth inspections. Eighteen months ago, they bought the Betta Inspect It franchise for the area and a few months later were joined by Brendan Smith, a licensed building practitioner who has moved into project management, and who shares with John a keen eye for detail. “Because we have a trade background, it means that 99% of the time as project managers we can quickly solve problems on site without having to go back to the designer, so without any delays, which saves budget,” says John. Given that a lot of the education projects they’re involved with are renovations, which throw up the unexpected all the time, dealing with the unexpected is an important part of what John and Brendan bring to their projects, and it’s their building backgrounds that also underpin the pre-purchase inspections they do under the Betta Inspect It umbrella. Before taking on the franchise, John was doing one or two building inspections a week. Now, between the two of them, they’re averaging around three a day. This is made possible by the level of infrastructure and administration run out of the franchise’s head office, John explains. “They have a million-dollar software programme we have on our tablets which means the reports we fill in on the tablets are sent instantly the minute we leave the property. They book the jobs for us and because there’s two of us, we can generally do an inspection within three days, and if someone needs one urgently, we can usually help.” Along with smoke alarm testing and meth-testing, Jan focuses on Healthy Homes inspections for landlords who are now legally required to meet the government’s minimum requirements. It’s like a warrant of fitness for a rental house as John describes it, and as of 1st July 2025 it carries a fine of up to $15,000 if a house is not compliant. Three months ago, Geoff Revitt joined the team to help Jan with the Healthy Homes workload. Jan also does the bulk of the meth-testing which they do under the Betta Inspect It franchise with an increasing number of landlords having their properties meth-tested before and after tenants move in. Jan and John were both shocked to realise the extent of it. “Between 50% and 60% of the houses we do a meths test on fail, six out of ten show some sort of traces, and you have to get it cleaned professionally or you make it worse. I personally wouldn’t buy a house that hadn’t been meth-tested after what I’ve seen.” Invision Project Consulting is a local company employing locals, and as part of the Betta Inspect It franchise, they’re sponsoring events and charities, from car shows to supporting the local hospice. Whether it’s project managing an educational refurbishment, or inspecting a house or home, Invision Project Consulting takes pride in their work, keeping things running smoothly, homes healthy, and making sure that a homeowner can have confidence in their newly-purchased house.
