Returning from the United States during the Covid-19 pandemic, Charlotte recognised an opportunity to bring advanced North American building science – particularly around thermal performance, airtightness, and energy efficiency – into a local context ready for more ambition. Alki Design emerged as a practice dedicated to bespoke, ethical architecture that serves both people and planet. “As architects, we have a huge responsibility to do right by our clients,” Charlotte says. “But we have an even bigger responsibility to do right by our planet.” For many New Zealanders, the dream of crafting a home often meets the realities of budget, market pressure, and the complexities of the building industry. Charlotte has found that the challenge isn’t a lack of creativity – it’s the moment where homeowners must balance aspirations with investment, future goals, and performance. “Compromise is one of the hardest parts of the process,” she says. “Many of us carry the hope that a home will serve our lives now, and our future plans. It’s natural to think ahead, especially regarding resale value. But when we design intentionally – for who we are as individuals and communities – we create spaces that support ourselves, each other, and our environment.” Charlotte frequently sees sustainable design elements squeezed when budgets tighten, but believes responsible, high-performing architecture doesn’t need to be more expensive – it simply needs to be more thoughtful. “Often, it’s about shifting priorities, not increasing the budget,” she says. “Restraint can be incredibly powerful. A smaller footprint, a refined palette, or materials chosen for durability and performance can create something more beautiful and more responsible.” At Alki Design, budget constraints are treated as a design brief in their own right – a catalyst for clarity and innovation. “Creativity is born in moments of restraint,” Charlotte says. “When we refine our size or limit our palette, we open the door to designs that are both intentional and inspiring.” This philosophy is exemplified in the Wānaka Cabin, the compact studio-home Charlotte shares with her partner. Constructed from untreated timber, carbon-sequestering natural materials, and reclaimed double-glazed windows, it demonstrates that high performance and beauty are achievable on modest budgets and footprints. The project has since set a tone for Alki Design’s growing portfolio across the South Island and beyond, from Bob’s Cove and Franz Josef to Northland. One current project for a landlord client is also proving that responsible design and ethical material sourcing can be a commercially sound investment. Looking ahead, Charlotte is committed to measured growth that prioritises quality over scale, keeping Alki Design’s values front and centre. “I’ll always choose to be a small studio,” she says. “The intimacy between architect and client is the heart of residential architecture for me. That level of empathy, care, and collaboration is something you can only maintain when you stay close to the work.” Servicing the Wakatipu Basin 027 699 1966 scott@fisherbuilt.co.nz • PLUMBING • GASFITTING • DRAINLAYING • CENTRAL HEATING P: 03 428 2299 E: plumbing@queenstown.co.nz www.plumbingqueenstown.co.nz Q U E E N S T O W N Representing Excellence Master Plumbers
