Matt, a born-and-bred builder, knew from a young age that the tools of the trade were his future. Taught the old-school way by his uncle, who has been building for the past 50 years, Matt’s grounding in the fundamentals has shaped his approach to projects of all sizes. “Our boys could build a house with a sack of timber and a pile of nails,” says VB Building Solutions build administrator Miritza Vining. “They’ve got that broad, old-school knowledge you don’t always see these days.” Meanwhile, Pete’s path took him across the Tasman, where he became a qualified carpenter in Sydney, specialising in high-end renovations and new builds. After gaining valuable experience in Australia, he returned to his hometown of Nelson with his wife Jess, who also has a strong background in property, to team up with Matt and establish VB Building Solutions. The company has built a reputation for tackling everything from high-spec architectural projects to commercial fit-outs and property maintenance. One recent example is the transformation of one of Nelson’s iconic heritage buildings, the Smythe Building at 300 Trafalgar Street. VB Building Solutions completely rebuilt its front facade and re-clad more than half of the building, as well as providing earthquake-strengthening works for public safety. VB Building Solutions thrives on variety. One day the team might be crafting delicate architraves in a heritage bungalow renovation, and the next they are building a large-scale barn with commercial functionality. “We go from one extreme to the other,” says Miritza. “That’s what makes the job so rewarding. It’s never the same two days in a row.” The variety of projects undertaken by VB Building Solutions plays an important part in mentoring the next generation of tradespeople. Apprentices benefit from exposure to a wide variety of materials and methodologies, gaining well-rounded skills across renovations, new builds, and property maintenance. “They’re learning the full trade, which is so important for the future of our company and our industry,” Miritza says.
