Ōtautahi Builders Variations can kill a project, so we involve a quantity surveyor early on to provide a clear, fixed price and certainty around what the client’s getting.” BUILDING In a construction landscape that’s seen its fair share of uncertainty, Christchurchbased Ōtautahi Builders continues to thrive, backed by nearly a decade of consistent growth, loyal clients, and strong industry partnerships. Director Matthew Quinn says 2025 is shaping up to be a good time to build or renovate, with interest rates stabilising and confidence increasing in the market. Now in its ninth year of operation, Ōtautahi Builders has never really slowed down, even during the tough periods of recent years. Much of that comes down to repeat work and satisfied clients, Matthew says. “We’ve been flat out the whole time. A lot of our work is renovations, and when we do a good job on something like a kitchen, clients then bring us back for the bathroom, the extension, or the outdoor area. We’re building long-term relationships, not just houses.” Those relationships extend to subcontractors as well, and these are a key strength for the business. Ōtautahi Builders operates in close partnership with trusted trades, including Ethos Plumbing, run by Josh Tate. “I met Josh when he was starting out and we’ve worked side-by-side ever since. Decent contractors are hard to find, and he was great. We now share an office, so quoting is seamless. If there’s a plumbing question on-site, we can sort it instantly. It takes the stress out of the build and reduces variation costs for the client.” Keeping variations to a minimum is a core value for Ōtautahi Builders, especially in this tight residential market. “We stick to the quote – that’s a biggie for us. Variations can kill a project, so we involve a quantity surveyor early on to provide a clear, fixed price and certainty around what the client’s getting.” With home renovation, clients are often relying on extended mortgages, so transparency is critical. “If someone comes in with a much cheaper quote, you’ve got to ask why. It often means the price will go up later. We just do it properly from day one.” While renovations make up a good portion of the company’s workload, Ōtautahi Builders is still completing new builds, and many of those are for developers and investors, particularly in high-growth areas like Halswell and Selwyn. “Those areas are really taking off. When we build a house in Halswell it gets rented out straight away. There’s great infrastructure and schools in the area and young families want to be there.” Ōtautahi Builders’ reach extends beyond Christchurch, taking on projects everywhere from Tekapo to Hanmer Springs. Looking ahead, Matthew says there’s interest in his company moving into more commercial work, though the tendering process can be time-consuming. “Residential is a lot more straightforward, and we like being able to work closely with our clients and get their projects right.” Ōtautahi Builders offers a full range of construction services, including residential builds, renovations, fencing, and property maintenance. The team focuses on quality craftsmanship, clear communication, and genuine collaboration. “In Christchurch, it still feels like a village, so reputation is everything. We take pride in our work, we back it up, and we’re there for our clients months after the job is finished if they need anything.” 021 682 625 | matt@otautahibuilders.co.nz | otautahibuilders.co.nz Residential Construction | Renovations Fencing | Property Maintenance Looking for a reliable, local Plumber?Look no further!
