T T from page 30 “We treat the customer’s hard-earned money as if it were our own.” system — at the time a relatively new approach for the district — saved the client approximately $1 million. More recently, the $5-million State Highway 6 Park Ridge roundabout project demonstrated the company’s ability to manage high-stakes public infrastructure. The primary challenge involved constructing a major roundabout on a busy state highway while maintaining traffic flow. To minimise disruption, the team suggested creating a sealed two-lane diversion road, an idea the client and local authorities loved. It allowed the entire roundabout to be constructed at once, improving quality control and reducing the overall construction time. Plus, it provided a physical barrier between road users and the work site, significantly reducing safety risks. The team also had to work around critical existing services, including gas lines and fibre optic cables. In a competitive sector, Paul believes their point of difference is a proactive mindset, foreseeing problems and innovating with workarounds. “We treat the customer’s hard-earned money as if it were our own,” he says. This accountability extends to “social costs”, with a heavy emphasis on minimising dust, noise, and visual disruption for neighbouring residents and tourism operators. Paul says demonstrating value add is a constant goal, as “cheapest is not necessarily the best value” when long-term quality is at stake. They’ve often been an early adopter of efficient technology, sometimes being among the first in New Zealand to use specific machinery configurations that lower fuel consumption and environmental impact. Like many contractors, Paul has also had to keep pace with increasing training and compliance demands, while continuing to deliver on projects. The company’s team is central to that effort, with ongoing investment in training and development a key priority. That comes with its own challenges, particularly in encouraging younger workers to commit to long-term upskilling. “You can’t win a marathon without training and commitment.” Paul sees maintaining and investing in a strong workplace culture as critical to the business’s success, helping build a sense of ownership and pride among staff. Looking ahead, he remains focused on sustainable growth and investing in his team. “Remaining sharp, clear on direction, taking the time to reflect and continue to grow our team; they are our tomorrow,” Paul adds.
