Clive Wilson Switchboards is entering a new chapter with the same values that have underpinned the Invercargill business for more than 55 years: quality workmanship, trusted relationships, and tailored electrical solutions. Founded in 1968 by electrician Clive Wilson in his home garage, the company has grown into one of New Zealand’s best known switchboard manufacturers. Today it operates from a modern 2300sqm Clyde Street facility, employing about 25 staff across design, manufacturing, automation, powder coating, engraving, stores, and administration. Now the third generation of the Wilson family is stepping forward, with siblings Chris Wilson and Kylie Thompson formally appointed directors alongside longtime leader Alan Wilson. Kylie says the transition has been carefully managed, with Alan remaining actively involved and continuing to work with many long-standing clients. “Our customers know they can still pick up the phone and speak with Alan, while Chris and I are building on everything that has made the company what it is today,” Kylie says. Clive Wilson Switchboards manufactures custom switchboards, control panels, automation systems, and power distribution solutions for clients throughout New Zealand, including dairy processors, heavy industry, manufacturing plants, and commercial operators. Rather than producing off the shelf products, Clive Wilson Switchboards focuses on bespoke builds designed around each customer’s site, footprint, and operational needs. “Sometimes clients have tight plant rooms or specific size constraints. They need everything to fit into a certain space while still delivering the performance required.” Demand is also rising for solar integration, with businesses upgrading existing boards or specifying new switchboards that can accommodate renewable energy systems. “We are seeing more customers asking how they can future proof their sites. Solar is growing in New Zealand and that is flowing through into switchboard design.” The business has held ISO 9001 certification since 1995 and undergoes annual audits. It is also a Schneider Electric Accredited Prisma Partner, reflecting its focus on recognised industry standards. Clive Wilson Switchboards has also invested in advanced drafting, automation capability, arc flash risk studies, and smart monitoring systems that help clients improve safety and reduce downtime. Chris brings practical field experience after working in Australia’s oil and gas sector following his electrical apprenticeship, while Kylie is helping guide the business into its next phase. “What we bring is a focus on where the industry is heading, new technology, and how we keep evolving while still delivering the service people know us for,” Kylie says. Despite wider economic pressure, the company remains busy, supported by strong Southland demand and relationships built over decades with customers nationwide. Low staff turnover is another point of pride. “We treat our people like family. We invest in training, health and safety, and we listen to our team because they are the experts in their roles.” For the family, taking stewardship of the company carries real meaning. “To continue what Grandad started, and what Dad has dedicated 50 years to building, is a huge privilege. Doing that together as brother and sister makes it even more special.”
