Central Drainlaying provides more than just vital infrastructure across the district; the company gives specialist advice and solutions to their clients as well. Cromwell-based founder Nigel McKinlay made his mark in the industry with his role at Lakes Contract Services as a contractor to Queenstown Lakes District Council in the late 1990s, completing many varied drainage construction and maintenance works across the 3 Waters network. He also later worked for Delta Civil and was involved once again with construction and maintenance of the Central Otago District Council 3 Waters projects. Starting his own business Central Drain- laying in 2013, one of the initial projects was the first of five subdivision stages over several years at Millbrook Resort in Arrowtown. He also carried out drainage works for the Gibbston Valley Resort subdivision and more recently its golf course clubhouse. In recent years, he teamed up with Contracts Manager Roger Dawson, leading a 16-person team involved in the supply and installation of more than 68km of underground network infrastructure and associated systems for the Santana Minerals Bendigo-Ophir Gold Project. As a specialist drainlaying service, they work with other civil, earthworks and drainage contractors to complete many large-scale projects. “What this approach allows for is our contractor clients can provide their own earthworks machinery, road trucks and existing staff to complete these projects, with Central Drainlaying providing skilled and qualified drainlayers to install the underground infrastructure while utilising their own machinery,” Nigel said. Completing a QLDC and Mt Cardrona Station joint venture providing the Cardrona Valley with two new water intakes, reticulation to a raw water pond, a new water treatment plant and reservoir, and the reticulation from Cardrona to the new Wastewater Treatment Plant has been another highlight of Nigel’s 30-year career. “We are lucky in that we live and work in a high growth area.” Central Drainlaying is passionate about supporting their local Cromwell community from where their office is based. They are proud sponsors of the Cromwell Junior Rugby Football Club, and they also support Cromwell College through the Gateway Training Program. Cromwell, in particular, was expanding fast and developers were buying land on the fringes, which will soon lead to more infrastructure work. Central Drainlaying is continually upskilling its team to become certified drainlayers, with staff also attending block courses as they study towards Level 4 Water Reticulation standards. The company currently has three apprentices, and Nigel sees huge value in training his own staff. “Our passionate team has many years of experience behind them and all work hard to achieve the best results every time.” They have a stable and steady workforce and not a lot of staff turnover, and they keep their health and safety standards high. Clients receive a weekly report on work completed and forward planned work in the weeks ahead, keeping communication open at all times. Central Drainlaying will even head out into the smaller areas such as Millers Flat and Ranfurly and tackle the smaller jobs in the rural areas of the district. As projects of note include subdivision and underground network construction at Homestead Bay, Harvest Park, Hanley Farms, Parkridge, Lake View, 5 Mile villas, Te Pa Tahuna, Skyline, Hogans Gully Farms new golf course and Ayrburn.
