The locally owned and operated electrical business works across residential and commercial projects, delivering reliable electrical solutions with a strong focus on safety, quality workmanship, and clear communication. From small upgrades and maintenance through to full installations and new builds, they approach every job with care and attention to detail. “One thing we are quite passionate about is heating and ventilation – making sure a house is warm and dry with no damp,” says owner Charlie Harrex, who set up the company in 2017. “Just because a house is older it doesn’t mean that it can’t be dry and warm,” Harrex Electrical has a great team, he says, and they genuinely enjoy working together. “That’s something I’m very proud of, and I think it reflects well on the company culture.” When it comes to new builds, he recommends getting an electrician involved in the earlier stages. “We like to be a part of the planning process so we can make suggestions to future-proof the home.” The company has recently moved its base to Mosgiel. “It’s a community I have been involved with for a long time so it’s nice to be here,” Charlie says. He notes there are a lot of new builds on at the moment, and lots of enquiry over the wider Otago region they service. “We have gone as far north as Oamaru and down to Cromwell and Alexandra. Laura, our office administrator, works from Alexandra, and has identified there is a bit of demand for electrical work down there.” The company has had some diverse projects on the go recently. “We did the shop fit-out for Mecca in Dunedin. That was quite interesting. It was a pretty big job and very detailed with plenty of lights in there,” Charlie says. They were also involved in a large renovation at Haywood Point, and have just rewired an art deco home, which was solid brick. “The client wanted to have everything in keeping with the art deco era, so that was a good challenge.” They were also involved in the new Fish and Game offices in Mosgiel. Charlie really enjoys the lighting side of the business. “It’s so easy to over-light or under-light an area,” he says. “It’s important to sit down and work out what you want to achieve with the lightning. Outside lighting with LEDs always looks good; they can be used to enhance the look of your home or just to get to the front door without tripping up at night, or do both. “LEDs are really cost-efficient and cut down your overall energy costs. We’ve just started getting into solar installs after a few clients asked us to, so that is another step towards energy efficiency in your home.” The team prides itself on doing things properly from the start. They believe good electrical work is about more than just technical skill – it’s about understanding the project, providing honest advice, and delivering results you can trust. Harrex works across residential and commercial projects, delivering reliable electrical solutions with a strong focus on safety, quality workmanship, and clear communication.
