Established in 2011 by Rob Curle, the company was born out of Rob’s long-held ambition to build something of his own. When he was given an opportunity to purchase a truck and digger from a local contractor, who was selling up, he took the leap and has not looked back. Not only was it an opportunity to establish his own business, it meant he could provide a dependable, high-standard service for his community, values he still stands by today. What started as a modest set-up has since expanded significantly to include a team of 28, with 12 diggers and 10 trucks, making Curle Contracting the perfect team for many jobs. Initially offering support as a civil-based company, Curle Contracting has now branched out into a multi-disciplinary business, with specialist teams working across other areas, including forestry and playground installation. The latter has become a standout feature of the business, with the team delivering projects such as the Caroline Bay playground, an achievement described as a major milestone and a privilege. Other projects have included developing the Yorktown subdivision in West Melton, where they transformed a forestry block into a fully serviced development. They have also completed bridge work, including bridge deck replacement and strengthening, with one of their jobs taking just two days instead of the scheduled week. Rob and his wife Jan say each new capability has been driven by the strength of the team, which is crucial to the success of the business. He says everything the company does, comes down to the skill, attitude and commitment of its people on the ground. Forestry remains another cornerstone of the business, with capabilities covering everything from felling through to land preparation. “What sets our forestry work apart is the combination of practical expertise, reliability, and a strong focus on doing the job safely and efficiently in challenging environments, and leaving the site tidy at the end of the job,” says Rob. On the civil side of the business, Curle Contracting carries out earthworks, drainage, subdivision development and council projects, while residential work includes driveways, landscaping and site preparation. Their work also extends into farming and water solutions, including pipeline installation for council water plants, track maintenance, and a growing range of rural services. Curle Contracting has also established strong partnerships with other organisations over the years, such as Corde, Downer and local councils. “In many cases, we’re brought in to complement larger project teams, providing skilled operators, machinery, and on-theground expertise to help keep projects moving efficiently and to a high standard.” The team also plays an important hands-on role during emergency events, assisting with flood response, fire support and snow clearing to help keep local communities connected. At the heart of the business is a deep commitment to Canterbury.
