Operations manager Nicola Nish says the business has seen a steady shift in what clients are looking for, with greater interest in smarter, more efficient solutions for both homes and workplaces. She says regular maintenance on heat pumps is often overlooked, particularly after winter use, but plays a key role in system performance and longevity. Cleaning drains and removing built-up debris helps units continue to run efficiently through summer and keeps indoor air quality high. Alongside servicing and installations, Bright Sparks Electrical continues to evolve with industry trends. LED lighting has become standard practice in recent years, while the team is now carefully expanding into photovoltaic systems. “We are getting into PV slowly and making sure we get our pricing right before we push too far ahead,” Nicola says. “It is something we see as part of the future, and we want to do it properly.” A strong pipeline of retrofit work with growing demand driven by compliance standards, and a focus on correct installation, are underpinning steady growth for Premier Insulation Southland. Branch managers Liam Schreurs and Tyler Nimo say the business has evolved quickly since 2022, when they took over the operation from Liam’s father after two years working alongside him. Today, retrofit insulation makes up the majority of the company’s workload, with demand largely driven by Healthy Homes requirements and Government-backed programmes, such as EECA’s Warmer Kiwi Homes initiative. “These programmes bring in a lot of work and we appreciate that,” Tyler says. “They help homeowners and landlords, but they also support businesses like ours to grow.” She says a consistent challenge is educating homeowners about the benefits of insulation, particularly outside the colder months. “Every year, people wait until they are cold before they call us,” Tyler says. “There is still a lack of understanding that insulation regulates temperature year round. It keeps homes warmer in winter, but it also helps keep them cooler in summer.” Also operating across Otago with the Premier Insulation Otago agency, Tyler and Liam run dedicated teams in each region, with work extending from Invercargill through to Dunedin and across Central Otago. “Central Otago is still a smaller market for us right now, but it is an area we are working to grow so we can help as many people as possible,” Tyler says. A key part of the company’s approach is starting every retrofit project with a detailed assessment. Tyler says many homes already have insulation installed, but it is often under- performing. Incorrect installation is one of the most common issues the team encounters, and a major focus for the business. “A lot of people don’t realise there is a right way to install insulation,” Tyler says. “We often see products that have been put in incorrectly, and that makes a big difference to how well they work.” Smart home technology is another growing area, with the business offering systems that allow clients to control lighting and heating with ease. Using PDL Wiser smart switch gear, Bright Sparks Electrical can deliver both simple upgrades and full home automation. “One of the best things about it is how easy it is to retrofit,” Nicola says. “You do not need specialist wiring – we can upgrade existing homes just by changing the switch gear.” Established in 2002, Bright Sparks Electrical has built a strong reputation across the region, with more than two decades of experience supporting residential and light commercial projects. A team of more than 20 staff delivers electrical, heating, cooling, and ventilation solutions, backed by a focus on reliability and service. Nicola says the team aims to attend to enquiries within a couple of days wherever possible, and if time frames cannot be met, they will refer clients to trusted industry contacts. “We understand how important timing is, especially for our builder clients,” she says. “We do everything we can to keep things moving on-site.” Bright Sparks Electrical remains focused on delivering value and dependable service, with a wide range of solutions designed to enhance comfort in homes and workplaces year round. “It is about making sure people can enjoy their spaces,” Nicola says.
