As the region’s economic and development agency, Great South works across a wide range of sectors to support sustainable growth, enable investment and strengthen the wellbeing of communities. Its impact is not always highly visible day to day but the results are increasingly evident across the region. Chief executive Chami Abeysinghe says the organisation’s focus is simple: to create long term value for Southland by connecting people, insights and opportunities. “Great South exists to support the success of this region. That means working alongside businesses, councils, iwi and communities to unlock opportunities that might not otherwise be realised.” Recent reporting highlights the breadth of that work, particularly in sectors where Southland has a natural advantage. The development of the Regional Aquaculture Pathway is a standout example. Led by Great South, this work has brought together industry, iwi, councils and central government to create a clear, coordinated plan for how aquaculture can grow in Southland in a sustainable and regionally aligned way. The pathway sets out where and how development can occur, identifies the infrastructure and investment needed and ensures environmental and community outcomes are carefully considered alongside economic opportunity. “Aquaculture is a strong example of what can be achieved when a region works together with a shared purpose.” “It is about creating sustainable economic opportunities that also respect our environment and the values of our communities.” Energy is another area where Great South is making a measurable impact. Through the Regional Energy Strategy and initiatives like the (Solar) Powering Southland event, the organisation is helping businesses and communities better understand and adopt renewable energy solutions. Practical tools such as solar mapping, alongside targeted workshops, are supporting informed investment decisions and accelerating the uptake of clean energy across the region. Housing and community wellbeing also remain key priorities. Recent analysis of Southland’s growing 65-plus population is helping to build a clearer picture of future housing needs, supporting more informed planning and encouraging the development of homes that are fit for purpose. This work ensures that economic growth is matched by strong, connected communities. Underlying all of this is a strong commitment to collaboration. “We know we cannot do this alone,” Chami says. “Our impact comes from working together. When we align around a shared vision for Southland, we can achieve outcomes that benefit not just our economy but our communities as well.” As Southland continues to evolve, Great South’s role as a connector, enabler and advocator remains critical.
