Switchbuild designs and manufactures industrial switchboards while delivering automation, control systems and electrical engineering solutions for infrastructure and industrial clients across New Zealand. The business traces its origins to 1976, when it operated as Clive Wilson (Dunedin) Ltd before being rebranded as Switchbuild in 2005. From its inception, the company has developed a reputation for delivering fit-for-purpose electrical and control solutions for sectors including water and wastewater, energy, manufacturing, and municipal infrastructure. General Manager Michael Cumming says the company’s strength lies in combining switchboard manufacturing, electrical engineering, and automation expertise within a single delivery model. “While these disciplines are often brought together, the integration of switchboard manufacturing and automation programming sits at the core of what we do.” The company designs and manufactures low voltage switchboards, motor control centres, and power distribution systems for use in commercial installations, industrial plants, pump stations, treatment facilities, and large infrastructure installations. This includes the in-house manufacture of the Simotrol Power Distribution and Motor Control Centre system, a modular industrial platform developed for demanding operating environments. The system is independently tested and certified to AS/NZS 61439, providing confidence in safety, performance, and compliance for critical infrastructure applications. Custom-built control panels and generator synchronisation systems are also produced inhouse, allowing projects to move from design through manufacturing and testing before installation. Maintaining this manufacturing capability locally has been a defining feature of the business. Switchboards and control systems are built and factory-tested in Dunedin before being delivered to sites around the country. Factory acceptance testing allows systems to be fully checked before installation, reducing commissioning risk and ensuring equipment integrates correctly with existing infrastructure.
