By then Mark had been managing the heavy haulage and house relocation department for 15 years and he knew there were customers who would still need the heavy haulage services he enjoyed providing. A phone call from a company with a house to shift, combined with a visit to the North Island where someone was getting out of the house-moving business altogether, meant within a few weeks McNeilly Heavy Haulage was shifting its first house with more to follow. Mark now runs a team of seven skilled staff which includes two former staff members from his old company. As well as building relocation they transport plant and machinery such as dozers and diggers and overdimension cargo such as silos, transformers and turbines. The complexities of the job mean Mark has adapted the old carpentry adage to his own purposes. “We measure twice and cart once. There’s an awful lot of planning involved when something is overweight and over-dimension. “There are permits, route surveys, modelling, not to mention working with all the regulatory authorities to get permission, and that’s just the beginning.” Mark is responsible for the safe arrival of the cargo and coordinating communication between clients and the stakeholders to ensure a safe and manageable delivery route. Extensive modelling combined with Mark’s hands-on, in depth experience means he can anticipate the hazards and knows who he needs to talk to. These include rail and roading authorities such as NZTA, and their specific maintenance contractors who manage the roads; landowners where an oversize, overdimension load is required to leave the road and cross private property; and, on a route such as between Christchurch and Invercargill, the multiple power boards from whom you may require over-height as well as overdimension permits. He understands stability, centre of gravity, load dynamics, axle loadings and how much cross fall the loads can handle. His assessment of all the different influences on whether a load will stay on its wheels is supported by load plans and engineered drawings. Mark is a long-standing board member of the Heavy Haulage Association and is currently in his second year as Chairman. He believes in giving back to the industry he loves, and he knows how important it is to be a voice at the table when rules and regulations are being formulated. Whether it’s a bridge beam or a secondhand heritage villa, Mark likes nothing better than taking on the responsibility of working within those rules and regulations to get the load where it needs to go legally, safely, and with minimal disruption. “We measure twice and cart once.
