The new extension continues to centre on the site’s dramatic outlook over Queenstown Bay and the surrounding mountains. Steve says it is one of the most photographed views in the country, and that hasn’t changed. “The front of the building is predominantly glass, so we maximise views,” he says. Inside, the design takes its cue from the landscape beyond the windows. Deep blues and greens echo Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding tussock country, while a 32sqm living wall introduces a strip of greenery into the otherwise alpine environment. A fully electrified commercial kitchen replaces traditional gas systems as part of a move to reduce the operations’ footprint. Deconstruction will now begin on the original hilltop complex. Heavy machinery is expected on-site in the coming months, with three to four months needed to clear the footprint before excavation begins. That final stage is expected to take almost three years, with the opening of the final complex scheduled for early 2029. Once complete, the redevelopment will deliver a 650-seat Stratosfare Restaurant, new conference and events facilities, and an extra 362sqm of outdoor decking. There is also one other epic addition to come. Later this year, Skyline plans to open a new ‘Vortex’ slide, launching from the viewing deck with a 20-metre vertical drop. The high-speed attraction is expected to be one of the longest of its kind in New Zealand. Since 2018, Skyline Queenstown has added a new four-seater chairlift, expanded its luge tracks, installed a 10-seater gondola, and built a multi-storey car park, along with new base and top terminals. Geoff says the scale of the investment reflects confidence in the region’s growth, with international visitor numbers surpassing prepandemic levels. “We’ve been operating here for nearly 60 years, and this project is about making sure the experience at the top of Bob’s Peak reflects that,” he says. “We’re building for the next 60 years, not just the next few seasons.”
