Established in Oamaru in 2020 by Mark and his wife Kylie, the family-owned business has grown from modest beginnings into a respected North Otago civil contractor employing around 10 staff, depending on the workload. The company now delivers earthworks, drainage, roading, concrete works, asphalt, kerb and channel, traffic management and subdivision infrastructure projects across the Waitaki district. “If our culture is going to be anything, it’s honesty. That straightforward approach has helped McWin Construction build strong working relationships with clients, including the Waitaki District Council, Network Waitaki, BGIS, local developers, and private customers. Recent work has included footpath contracts in Oamaru, subdivision developments and commercial asphalt projects. Civil construction may be the company’s trade, but people sit at the centre of the business. The culture at McWin reflects the backgrounds of the team, with an emphasis on respect, effort, and keeping their word. “We’ve all come from common ground. None of us were born with a silver spoon in our hands, so we treat clients with respect and work hard for the trust they give us,” says Mark. That ethos carries through to the standard of work. If something takes longer to get the quality right, that’s what it takes. Everyone can see quality. You don’t have to be an expert to know when a job has been done properly.” Another part of the business that gives Mark particular satisfaction is creating opportunities for people that may struggle to find work elsewhere. Providing a second chance, along with clear expectations and pride in workmanship can have a lasting impact. “How does someone get a chance if nobody gives them one? Sometimes, the people who find it hardest to get work turn out to be the best workers once they’re given an opportunity,” says Mark. “When people take pride in what they do, they make better decisions and it helps the whole community.” Community and environmental responsibility are also increasingly visible parts of McWin’s identity. The business sources 90% of materials from regional quarries, and uses erosion and sediment controls to protect waterways and native habitats. It is also working towards further recycling, lower-carbon products and planting more native species. That environmental awareness also shows up in small, practical gestures on-site. “Sometimes we come across plants that are more than a hundred years old. Instead of throwing them away, we’ll replant them and give them another life.” The company’s growth has surprised even its founders. “I couldn’t get a job anywhere, so I started the company with a station wagon, a compactor, a wheelbarrow and a couple of shovels. Kylie and I have just chipped away slowly. “Everything we’ve built has come from hard work and persistence.”
