Canyon Ridge: Queenstown Carpenters T T Kim Bowden DEVELOPMENT Take the back road between Queenstown and Arrowtown and you’ll come through Arthur’s Point — a pocket that’s long been popular with locals but is now starting to draw more attention. The neighbourhood is hitting its sweet spot — enough permanent residents to support a small but growing commercial precinct, without losing the character that drew people there in the first place. A pub, general store, cafés and an upgraded Nugget Point Hotel are part of that shift. Developer Shane Fairmaid, who is behind the boutique Canyon Ridge project above the Shotover River, says the change has been building over the past decade. “Arthur’s Point is a bit of a hidden gem — the locals know about it, but it’s not widely known in the wider market,” he says. “There’s quite a lot happening, and it’s really coming into its own.” The five-lot Canyon Ridge project is being delivered as house-and-land packages, with Shane - who is developing the project in partnership with home building company owner Mike Greer - opting to build the homes rather than sell bare sections. Two have already sold, with a third, Lot 4, currently on the market through White Fox Real Estate in Queenstown. Construction is well underway. Three homes are due for completion by August, with the remaining two expected to follow by mid-2027. The site itself was secured off-market and, according to Shane, stood out for a combination of elevation and aspect. “The great thing about the site is it’s an elevated rock site, so it’s very stable, and it’s got those north-facing aspects overlooking Skippers Canyon and up to Coronet Peak,” Shane says. “Even in the middle of winter it gets fantastic sun. You don’t get many sites like this in Queenstown.” Each property combines a four-bedroom home with a separate two-bedroom apartment on a single title. “It’s a good option for people who want a high-quality home but also a bit of rental income,” Shane says. Architecturally designed by Foley Group, the homes pair cedar and alpine tray cladding with schist stone walls and native planting. The intention is to deliver contemporary builds that work with the rugged landscape, rather than compete with it. From Canyon Ridge, residents can be on the slopes within 20 minutes, while the Queenstown cycle trail network passes within 100 metres, linking to Arrowtown, central Queenstown and an ever-expanding network of off-road tracks. The builds include higher-spec finishes that lean into the lodge-style feel buyers expect in this part of the world. “All the homes include a wellness hub — a sauna and spa — plus an outdoor kitchen and entertaining area with an automatically adjustable louvre system,” Shane says. Inside, features include three-car garaging, an internal lift connecting each level, floorto-ceiling glazing, European oak flooring and a feature gas fireplace with a floating schist hearth. “Even in the middle of winter it gets fantastic sun.
