Hillview Construction BUILDING Canterbury builder Hillview Construction has earned a strong reputation for taking on some of the region’s most technically demanding architectural projects, with director Shaun Campbell saying it’s that complexity that gets him and his team out of bed in the morning. “We’ve always specialised in architectural homes and challenging hill builds,” he says. “Every project is bespoke, every site is different, and the detail and complexity of our work is what drives us.” The award-winning, family-owned company was founded in 2008 by Shaun and his wife Kate, and today employs a close-knit team of 12, including apprentices, qualified builders and foremen. Hillview Construction deliberately keeps its operation small to ensure every client gets personal attention. “I’m involved with every project and I’m the face of the company,” Shaun says. “That’s one of the reasons we’ve stayed small – our clients are dealing directly with me throughout their build.” Right now, Hillview Construction is at the foundation stage of a 20-month project at Charteris Bay, where 2000 cubic metres of soil has been cut out of solid rock to create a platform for the home. It’s an example of the technically complex work the company thrives on. “We’re constantly thinking about how to put these builds together,” Shaun says. “We pride ourselves on anticipating challenges before they become problems. That’s where our experience really pays off.” The company proved its capability at the 2024 Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards, winning Regional Supreme, Category Gold, and a National Top 100 placing for a spectacular cliff-top home in Sumner. The 264sqm MAP Architects-designed house perched on a narrow ledge, demanded innovative engineering and construction solutions, including a cantilevered top floor with a nine-metre drop. Despite a quieter market across the building industry, Shaun says Hillview Construction’s workload has remained steady, thanks to its reputation in the high-end residential sector. He stays closely connected with the architects and designers, who regularly send work Hillview’s way, and he has noticed the pace of new designs starting to pick up again. “That’s a good sign – it shows confidence is coming back into the market, and we’ll see that translate into construction projects down the track.” Hillview Construction works with a trusted network of specialist subcontractors, from From Driveways To Slabs, We’ve Got You Covered Designer Concreting - brings over 20 years of experience to every project, delivering high-quality concrete solutions for homes and businesses. From stunning outdoor driveways, patios and paths to strong, reliable residential and commercial foundation slabs - we do it all. That collaboration is what ensures a quality outcome.” The company is also proud to be training the next generation of builders, with apprentices learning the full process of constructing complex homes from the ground up. With major new projects underway, including the new build at Charteris Bay and a significant renovation project at Tai Tapu, Hillview Construction is already eyeing up entries for the next Master Builders awards. “We take a lot of pride in benchmarking ourselves against our peers,” Shaun says. “It shows our clients the level of craftsmanship we deliver and keeps us motivated to keep raising the bar.”
