Form Construction Queenstown BUILDING Queenstown’s construction sector is booming, bringing with it a demand for bespoke architectural homes, and among those turning architectural dreams into reality is Form Construction, which has firmly established itself across the region as a specialist in high-end residential builds. Co-owned by experienced builder-operators Hamish Noton and Richard Capstick, Form Construction brings more than four decades of combined expertise to the sector. Hamish and Richard are both hands-on, with a philosophy centred on craftsmanship, detail, and uncompromising quality, all values that have cemented their reputation in Queenstown’s competitive building sector. As Queenstown’s building sector continues to boom, Form Construction is helping shape the growing district with projects that combine innovation and tradition, two key elements it prides itself on. The company operates with small, tight-knit teams, and works closely with local architects and clients, ensuring every home it crafts reflects the client’s vision. One of its recent standout projects is the restoration of Threepwood Stables, one of the oldest buildings in the Wakatipu Basin. Hamish describes the project as “an honour to be a part of”, noting that it not only preserves a piece of the region’s heritage, but also integrates a modern passive home, a testament to Form Construction’s ability to blend sustainability with historical character. It didn’t come without its challenges, however. “The main challenge was trying to integrate a passive build into the steel super-structure needed for earthquake strengthening. It was like building backwards,” says Hamish. He says when Form Construction started work on the heritage project it was on the verge of collapse. “Being able to save this building and bring it to a modern level of earthquake strengthening was a task, and it took many hours of unglamorous work by the team to achieve this, and we are very proud.” Form Construction’s work ethic, and the many people it partners with, helps contribute to overcoming challenges, while also ensuring each project meets client expectations. “We have surrounded ourselves with like-minded people. Staff and subcontractors all have a common goal, to deliver with no compromise,” Hamish says. “Being a small, hands-on company, we can ensure that this standard is maintained with every step.” Managing timelines and budgets in a region where demand for building is so high can also be a challenge. Hamish says the key is setting clear expectations from the outset. “We set realistic timelines and budget expectations right from the start.” Those conversations were important to have early on, he adds. Another standout project on Form Construction’s books was Hamish’s own home, which was built over three years. “It was a passionate build that showcases a passive home with great attention to detail,” he says, noting that those attributes are incorporated into each build. However, the project is not just Hamish’s home – it also secured the title of Master Builders National Craftmanship Award at House of the Year.
