Nailing it Homes BUILDING Oamaru building company Nailing It Homes has built its reputation on quality residential construction and long-term client relationships, with a decade of steady growth underpinned by repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals. While most of its work is in new homes and renovations, the company recently delivered one of the town’s most high-profile commercial transformations – the redevelopment of Whitestone Cheese’s new deli and diner on Thames Highway. Owned by Robyn and Peter Nind, Nailing It Homes keeps its focus on residential construction, from bathroom upgrades to full-scale house builds. “About 99.8% of what we do is residential,” Robyn says. “Our business is built on trust, and we’re proud that people come back to us and recommend us to others.” The Whitestone Cheese project began as a small repair job and expanded significantly as structural issues with the 1950s’ building were uncovered. When wall linings were removed, the Nailing It Homes team discovered there was no timber supporting the upper floor. A major reinforcement effort followed, including hand-digging under the building to install a steel portal frame, and extensive fireproofing to meet compliance for the accommodation upstairs. “It was a complex project with a very tight time frame, but we had the right skills and team to deliver it. It was a lot of work, but everyone just gave it 150%.” The result is a retro-inspired landmark that has quickly become a feature of Ōamaru’s streetscape and a magnet for visitors, with many stopping out the front for selfies. The project also showcased Nailing It Homes’ ability to handle complex structural renovations alongside its core residential work. Away from high-profile projects, Nailing It Homes has invested in its own subdivision, creating five new residential sections in Ōamaru, with only two still available. Robyn says house-and-land packages have been particularly attractive in the current lending environment. “Banks are more willing to lend on houseand-land packages than on bare land, and that has helped buyers progress with their plans,” she says. The business has also invested in diggers and trucks to handle its own earthworks, giving it control over scheduling and reducing the delays that often hold up building projects. “We wanted to avoid being dependent on other contractors, and if something needs doing we can get on to it immediately.” With more than 30 years of industry experience, Peter has seen the sector weather significant cycles, including the disruption of Covid-19. Robyn says the company’s decision to maintain a small, stable team has been critical. “Keeping things consistent meant we could provide security for our staff through uncertain times. That stability continues to be important.” Ōamaru’s size, she adds, is an advantage for building strong client and trade relationships. “We’ve worked with many of the same tradespeople for years, and a lot of our clients come back for additional work on their homes or farmhouses. In a town this size, people ask around, and we’re proud that our name comes up.” By focusing on quality, stability, and trusted relationships, Nailing It Homes is continuing to deliver for Ōamaru’s residential market, while proving its capability to take on complex commercial projects when called on.
