Statement Homes T T Bernadette Cooney BUILDING Christchurch design-and-build company, Statement Homes, has opened the doors to its new show home at 330 Ilam Road, Bryndwr, now available for viewing by appointment. More than just energy-efficient and sustainably built, the four-bedroom family home is a certified Super Home, independently verified to perform well above New Zealand’s minimum building code. Creating healthier, airtight and well-insulated homes is the aim of the Super Home movement, and Statement Homes is a proponent of and participant in the movement.. Led by husband and wife Victoria and Clayton Mitchell, Statement Homes launched in 2024, but the Mitchells are no newbies. With a combined 35 years in the building industry, they previously ran another construction business before reimagining their model with an emphasis on high-quality homes offering sustainable performance. “Our new show home is about showing people what’s possible when you combine smart design with genuine care for how a house performs, not just how it looks,” says Victoria. The two-storey home is a master class in both form and function. Designed in collaboration with Hunter Anderson Architecture, it features warm cedar cladding with Resene Rockcote detailing. An exposed concrete tilt-slab panel rises through the middle of the house, a centrepiece that also incorporates an innovative hydronic heating system. “There is no other heating required upstairs. It’s all through hydronic underfloor heating pipes in the floor slab and up the tilt slab. Combined with the solar panels on the rooftop, which help offset power usage, it’s an efficient heating design,” Victoria explains. The home’s open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space invites getting together, while a separate TV room, painted in deep tones, creates an intentional media room without being a distraction for guests. A breakout games room and spare guest suite with bathroom is accessed externally, giving flexibility for the family. A tuckedaway office, currently doubling as Statement Homes’ headquarters, offers a place for workfrom-home/life balance. “You need a space for all that technology, but you don’t want to see it spread across the house. Especially on weekends,” says Victoria. Upstairs, there are three spacious bedrooms, the master with ensuite, and a separate bathroom. Each bedroom offers sweeping views through double-glazed sliding windows designed for airflow and natural cooling during summers. An oak staircase with steel treads connects the levels, giving a nod to industrial design while maintaining a homely warmth. New Zealand wool carpets deliver comfort underfoot and sustainability throughout. The home includes a generous two-and-ahalf car garage fronted by a cedar door. Having been independently verified and granted Super Home certification, the property’s credentials are included in Christchurch City Council LIM reports, giving future owners clear assurance of its quality. Statement Homes’ footprint extends across Christchurch, Selwyn, and Waimakariri. Clayton, a licensed building practitioner with backgrounds in landscape architecture and engineering, is hands-on with every build. Victoria draws on her honours degree and business management expertise to keep projects seamless for clients.
