| 111 BUILDING Brendan Murray Construction Blended expertise brings growth While BMCs work spans several key sectors, its core expertise lies in the aged-care industry, delivering retirement villages, villas, apartments, and associated commercial facilities. T T Rosa Watson Bringing two Christchurch construction firms together to build a retirement village six years ago has led to national expansion for Brendan Murray Construction (BMC), named in the 2023 Deloitte Fast 50 Index. The firm was 11th overall, and was named Fastest Growing Construction Company. The Deloitte Fast 50 celebrates outstanding revenue growth over a three-year period. For BMC, the ranking was a testament to its ability to deliver consistent results, despite the challenging operating conditions facing the construction sector in recent years. Co-founder and director Braden Petrie says it was huge recognition for the firm. “As business owners, you often don’t get time to reflect. This gave us time to reflect on what we’d achieved over the last few years.” It was a huge boost for the team, he says. “You can definitely tell they were proud of the achievement as well.” He notes it has also helped attract talent to the team. Founded with the ambition of building projects that stand the test of time, the firm continues to expand its operations across New Zealand. A 36-strong team of area managers and project managers oversees construction projects stretching the length of the country, from a community centre in Kerikeri to a retirement village in Wanaka. It operates in three regions – northern, central and southern – run by regional managers with small local teams on each project. A large, nationwide supply base of reliable subcontractors, suppliers and contract builders supports each of the build crews. “We build the branch where the regional manager is, and then build our teams in different areas to serve the region,” Braeden says. While BMCs work spans several key sectors, its core expertise lies in the aged-care industry, delivering retirement villages, villas, apartments, and associated commercial facilities. Alongside this, BMC undertakes a wide range of commercial construction projects, from large-scale builds to interior fit-outs and specialised facilities, such as storage developments. The company is also increasingly active in the social housing space – a fast-growing area of demand – while continuing to support select private development projects across the country. Braeden and friend Brendan Murray joined forces in 2019, merging their companies off the back of an opportunity to build an agedcare development. “That was our first job in Christchurch. From there, we built on its success to deliver projects across the country in a range of sectors,” says Braeden. One of the big challenges was bringing all the right people together for a construction project, which is where building strong relationships is key, he says. “(It’s) bringing everyone together to achieve a common goal. We havea number of providers nationally.” It means being able to offer the same service anywhere in the country, he says. “There’s not a lot of commercial firms within our tier that do that – provide a solution for a provider nationally, like we do.” He says with an ageing population, aged care continues to be a growing industry. “It’s definitely a market that we are confident will continue to provide work for our company, and we’ll be able to continue to provide solutions for, which is cool.” Growing at such a rapid rate in six years has come with its challenges, he says. “With growth comes pressure and stress and a lot of learning. You’re always learning. It’s been hard, but rewarding at the same time. The market dropping away in the last two years was challenging.” However, the firm retained all its staff, which in allowed its commitment to serviceability to continue. “We maintained service, even though the volume was down,” Braeden says. That approach is paying dividends now business has picked up, and the firm remains committed to its strategic goals of building a business that will stand the test of time, he says.
