Plains Construction Panel system offers up plenty of potential T T Hugh de Lacy T T to page 118 Variety is the spice of life for Rangiora-based Plains Construction in the architecturally designed residential building market, and a recently completed project saw it expand its services into the prefabricated panel construction of a three-bedroom country house at Starvation Hill, west of Oxford. Plains Construction is a longstanding player in the Christchurch and North Canterbury markets, having been run as Colin O’Neill Building for 40 years by Colin O’Neill, until he went through a re-branding and sold the business to his former apprentice, James Davidson, in 2021. James has built on Colin’s reputation – and, at 72, Colin continues to serve as a mentor for staff and as occasional project manager. The Starvation Hill project presented Plains Construction with a distinctly different – and much faster – building system than the standard wooden framing. “It was quite a big house, 250sqm, designed by Rohan Collett Architecture of Christchurch, but with the Potius Panel System we had the walls up and the roof ready for the iron within a couple of days,” James says. “We had no trouble understanding and adapting to the system, which is built around LVL (laminated veneer lumber) and MDF (medium-density fibreboard), with all the main structural elements of the building pre-engineered and fabricated at Potius Panel System’s Nelson factory, then trucked to the North Canterbury site. “The roof panels are made of LVL rafters with an OSB (oriented strand board) diaphragm filled with 150mm of polyurethane insulation, while the wall panels have LVL framing, an OSB air barrier, and insulation depth to the client’s requirements,” James explains. “It was a new one on us, but we appreciated it, and look forward to building more houses to the same system.” Ph: 03 218 8919 • Email: admin@insidesystems.co.nz • 121 Eye Street • PO Box 1133, Invercargill • Plumbing • Drainage • Air Conditioning • Heating • Ventilation Safe and Reliable Electrical Services At AMTEC Electrical we are totally committed to supplying a service that consistently meets the requirements of our customers.
