Gary McCormick Transport Ltd: Warehouse Extension “With the cardboard press up and running, and a new front-loader truck added to the fleet, we’re focusing on strengthening these services while continuing to look after both our existing and new customers.” REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Gary McCormick Transport has completed a major extension to its Tinwald yard near Ashburton that significantly expands the company’s recycling capabilities. The expansion at the firm’s Bryant Street site includes a roof extension to one of its sheds, allowing front-loader trucks to empty daily cardboard collections directly into the facility. A new high-capacity baler installed inside the shed means cardboard can now be compacted on-site into bales, ready for onward transport. “This new machine allows us to prepare cardboard onsite instead of running multiple individual loads up to Christchurch,” managing director Gary McCormick says. “It saves time, reduces truck movements, and improves efficiency for our recycling services.” The upgrade is the latest development in the journey of a company that began more than three decades ago. Gary established the firm in 1990 with just a single truck and a determination to provide reliable haulage services for local farmers and manufacturers. From those modest beginnings, the business has grown into a well-established regional operator with clients across the South Island. Today, Gary McCormick Transport runs a fleet of seven specialised vehicles. These include three Hino front loaders – the latest of which arrived in August – along with an Isuzu Hiab for open-top bins, a Nissan Hiab, an Isuzu for collecting gantry bins, and another Isuzu dedicated to drum collections. The fleet is supported by three full-time drivers and several casual staff, who step in when required. The company offers a wide range of waste and recycling services, including lidded rubbish skips for permanent hire, open-top skips for construction sites or one-off clean-ups, gantry skips in seven- and nine-metre sizes, and household rubbish drums. Cardboard recycling cages are also available, catering to businesses looking for sustainable waste solutions. “The bin hire service is mainly used by local businesses and farmers, while the open-top and gantry skips are especially popular with builders,” Gary explains. “Our goal is to make waste removal as straightforward as possible for all types of customers.” In addition to the new cardboard baler, the company has also taken delivery of a brandnew front-loader truck, which will soon be a familiar sight on Ashburton streets as it services lidded skips around the district. “With the cardboard press up and running, and a new front-loader truck added to the fleet, we’re focusing on strengthening these services while continuing to look after both our existing and new customers,” Gary says. The latest investment underlines Gary McCormick Transport’s commitment to recycling and sustainability while continuing to deliver reliable, customer-focused transport solutions. More than 30 years after its launch, the company remains rooted in the community where it began, while steadily adapting to meet the demands of modern waste management and logistics. The expansion is a long-term investment in both the business and the district, ensuring the firm can keep pace with Ashburton’s growing needs well into the future.
