For Timaru-based NB Architects, being involved in key community projects that rejuvenate the region’s public spaces is hugely rewarding work. The firm has been involved in several projects in the region, the most significant recently being the restoration and redevelopment of the Timaru Theatre Royal and the South Canterbury Museum. The firm worked on the projects alongside DLA Architects, another local architectural firm. “We’ve been privileged to work on a wide range of projects that matter to the local community,” managing director Joshua Newlove says. “These projects involved careful consideration of heritage elements, while upgrading the facilities to meet the needs of today’s audiences and future-proof them for years to come.” The Theatre Royal brief was about breathing new life into a much-loved venue, while respecting its history, Josh says. “Working alongside specialists, we helped shape a design that retains the grandeur of the original while improving accessibility, backstage facilities, and the overall experience for performers and visitors alike. “The budget was substantial and reflective of the scope, including seismic strengthening, modern amenities, and improvements to the foyer and fly tower.” Josh says through talking with a number of people that will be involved in the facility into the future and finding out their needs, they were able to provide a solution that had wide appeal. “We listened carefully to a lot of people for this project.” The museum project had a similar dual focus – safeguarding important heritage while making it more usable for staff, researchers, and the public. Working within a tight footprint and budget, requiring clever spatial design to create new preparation and workspaces without compromising display areas was a challenge, Josh says.. “Both projects have required close collaboration with stakeholders, consultants, and contractors, and it’s been rewarding to see them take shape after years of planning.” Buildings like the Theatre Royal and the museum are cornerstones of community life, he says. “They’re places where people gather – to be entertained, to learn, and to connect. When these spaces are neglected or outdated, it affects how the community engages with them. Keeping them upgraded ensures they continue to serve the region’s needs, support local events, and attract visitors.” He says modernising doesn’t mean erasing history. “It means making sure these places are safe, accessible, and welcoming for everyone. A fit-for-purpose facility sends a strong signal that a community values its cultural and historical assets, and its people. “In a place like Timaru, these buildings are more than just bricks and mortar. They reflect who we are, where we come from and what we prioritise.” The firm is also currently involved in several school upgrades, and new builds and commercial housing developments. “Whether it’s designing a new teaching block or planning a multi-unit housing project, our role is to balance aesthetics, practicality, and long-term use,” Josh says. NB Architects has been part of the South Canterbury business landscape for more than a decade, specialising in residential, commercial, and public-sector architecture. It has a particular strength in education, heritage, and civic work. “In a place like Timaru, these buildings are more than just bricks and mortar. They reflect who we are, where we come from and what we prioritise.” Grant Smith - 027 788 9808 grant@firesafetysolutions.co.nz Nigel Smith - 027 735 1031 nigel@firesafetysolutions.co.nz Providing fire safety design services throughout the South Island for over 10 years.
