T T Rosa Watson Christchurch-based MWF Manufacturing is celebrating a winning haul at this year’s Master Joiner’s Awards. The company took out the best cabinetry category at the national awards for a dressing room that was designed as a four-sided walkin space. It also won the Canterbury regional award with a kitchen project. In the apprentice awards, Jamal Qualls won highest judged for workmanship and skill, best timber project for a project over two years and ultimate apprentice creative project, and Ged MacDonald won best fitment under two years. “The atmosphere after the awards was incredible,” managing director Gary Attenburg says. “There was a genuine sense of pride right across the business because every award represents the efforts of so many people. What made it special was seeing our whole team recognised for the standard they consistently produce.” He says the recognition across multiple categories showed the depth of talent throughout the business. “It reinforces that our systems, culture and craftsmanship are all moving in the right direction.” The awards allowed the company to benchmark itself against the very best in New Zealand and challenges the team to continually lift the standard. “It gives our staff something tangible to strive towards. Winning certainly builds credibility with clients, but more importantly it validates the hard work our team puts in every day. As we continue to grow, maintaining quality and building a stronger team are our biggest priorities.” He adds the recognition through the Master Joiners Awards gives clients confidence. A passion for the company is developing apprentices. The best way to strengthen our industry is by investing in the next generation rather than hoping skilled people become available,” Gary says. “Over the years we’ve had over 20 apprentices come through MWF, with the majority remaining in the industry after qualifying and many continuing their careers with us. “Some have progressed into leadership positions and now mentor apprentices themselves, which is incredibly rewarding to see. Watching someone arrive with little experience and leave as a highly skilled tradesperson is one of the most satisfying parts of running the business.” The company has experienced significant growth over the past few years, and is now focusing on growing sustainably. “We’re continuing to invest in our people, technology and facilities so we can continue to deliver our products and service while maintaining the quality we’re known for.” An exciting area of continued growth is the company’s own manufactured products, particularly My Little Pub, which Gary says has gained strong momentum. “Developing our own products alongside our bespoke commercial and residential joinery provides diversity and creates opportunities for innovation.” The company is expanding its Christchurch premises to support future growth and create a better working environment for the team. Gary says that ultimately the biggest investment is in people. “Great joinery is built by great people, and creating an environment where talented individuals can build long-term careers is something we’re very proud of. “One thing that probably ties all of this together is that MWF has never tried to be the biggest, but we’ve always wanted to be one of the best. “If we continue investing in our people, embracing innovation and never compromising on quality, the growth will naturally follow.” Producing quality upholstered furniture since 1968 Bringing passion and flair See our website: pacefurniture.co.nz or your closest retailer Headboards • Footstools • Chairs • Settees • Modular & Custom Designed Furniture Over six decades, Christchurch-based Pace Furniture has become a leader in commercial upholstery, with a passion and a flair for design that is sought across New Zealand.
