Rather than focusing solely on kitchens, Comfort Kitchens has supplied joinery throughout the development, including resident rooms, kitchenettes, offices, the café, bar, and a range of communal spaces. The project reflects the breadth of expertise that has helped Comfort Kitchens establish itself as a trusted partner on retirement village developments across New Zealand. Sales and marketing manager Aaron Davis says the company's relationship with Ryman has been built over decades, stretching back to the team's time as Aspire Joinery. When Aspire Joinery closed in early 2025 following the owner's retirement, 28 staff suddenly found themselves without work. Instead of walking away, Nigel Kilday and Anita Gilchrist took a significant risk, establishing Comfort Kitchens and approaching Ryman with a proposal to complete the remaining work already underway. "Ryman backed the people they already knew," Aaron says. "That trust gave us the opportunity to prove ourselves, and we've continued building that relationship ever since." Today, Comfort Kitchens not only delivers new retirement village projects but also holds Ryman's nationwide refurbishment contract, completing work fromWhangarei to Invercargill through a trusted network of installation partners. Aaron says one of the company's greatest strengths is its ability to turn ambitious design concepts into practical, buildable solutions while meeting programme and budget requirements. "Designers are coming up with more curves, softer edges, and more intricate details than ever before. Sometimes those ideas need refining, so we sit down and work out how to achieve the vision in a practical way." The company name reflects the philosophy behind every project. Aaron says modern kitchens are the heart of the home, bringing families and friends together, while commercial spaces also need to feel intuitive and welcoming. Comfort Kitchens aims to create joinery that is practical, functional, and genuinely comfortable to live and work with. Operating from a purpose built Christchurch factory, Comfort Kitchens has the capacity to manufacture 370 kitchens each year while also delivering custom commercial joinery and high end residential projects. Its work ranges from small renovation projects, architecturally designed homes, hotel, office or retail fit outs, and large scale retirement village developments. The experienced team combines decades of craftsmanship with younger apprentices, ensuring valuable trade knowledge continues to be passed on. The company's commitment extends beyond commercial success. Rather than sending surplus materials to landfill, Comfort Kitchens turned excess board and componentry into practical furniture, which was donated to non profit organisations like Ronald McDonald House to be used in their accommodation, and the Christchurch Aunties for use in homes for families who need it most. For Aaron, that community focus sits comfortably alongside the company's commercial capability. "We can deliver a nationwide retirement village or a single wardrobe for a local family," he says. "Whatever the project, it's about building something that's practical, built to last, and makes people's lives better.” aaron@comfortkitchens.co.nz COMFORT KITCHENS Located at the centre of the village, the serviced apartments have been designed to provide the independence of private living alongside additional support when required.
