Airtech’s specialist decarbonisation work includes the design and construction of centralised plant systems and energy centres. T T Karen Phelps For a company that has been operating in Christchurch for 26 years, Airtech NZ may be one of the region’s better-kept secrets. Behind the familiar world of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning is a much broader operation, combining design, engineering, electrical work, building automation, sheet metal manufacturing, construction, maintenance and specialist energy solutions. Managing director, Glen Smith, says the company has evolved considerably since it was established in 2000 and is now under new ownership. “Many people are surprised at the scale and complexity of projects we have delivered in the last 10 years,” Glen says. Airtech began with a mixture of residential and light commercial work, but its focus changed significantly following the Christchurch earthquake rebuild. It went on to complete many large, multi-storey commercial buildings, and over the past decade has increasingly specialised in commercial, institutional and industrial projects. Today, its work ranges from relatively straightforward air-conditioning systems in commercial buildings through to more complex design-and-build projects, including critical laboratory ventilation, large-scale decarbonisation projects for facilities such as hospitals, and ventilation systems for industrial processing plants This is underpinned by a team of qualified and experienced engineers and project managers working alongside an in-house team of skilled tradespeople. The company employs around 40 people across the central South Island and has developed a wide range of expertise under one roof capable of end-to-end projects, including mechanical, electrical and automation systems. Airtech’s specialist decarbonisation work includes the design and construction of centralised plant systems and energy centres. It has delivered large-scale hot water heat pump solutions to replace coal boilers at Timaru and Ashburton hospitals, Lincoln University and Christchurch Airport “A number of these projects have been completed with Airtech taking overall project responsibility on behalf of the client due to complexity of the services’ scopes of work,” says Glen. Building automation is another area where the company’s electrical and mechanical capabilities intersect, helping regulate heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and other building systems to improve energy efficiency. It also has its own sheet metal and fabrication facilities at its Middleton base alongside off-site manufacturing capabilities. Glen says this is becoming an increasingly important part of its approach to construction. “Rather than waiting for a building to reach the stage where services can be installed, Airtech can manufacture and assemble semi-complete modules off-site, ready to be transported to the building once it is out of the ground,” he explains. “It reduces a significant amount of production time off the project, especially being a central city site,” says Glen. The company also has a dedicated service department, maintaining and repairing systems it has installed, as well as those originally built by other contractors. “We have invested heavily in software packages that allow us to manage service delivery to customer sites as well as improved features like asset-tracking ability, asset reporting and record collation. This allows us to assist clients with asset replacement planning or forecasting, and gives clients better visibility of their sites and really assists with their Capex and OPEX planning.”
