Andy Turner started ATR Refrigeration Limited in 2007 knowing there was a huge gap in the market for industrial commercial refrigeration in South Canterbury. Nearly 20 years later, the company is still growing and is now contemplating taking on more staff in order to turn down less work. They still only do industrial commercial refrigeration, but because that includes a focus on HVAC maintenance schedules (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning), for their bigger clients, they occasionally help them out if they have an air-conditioning issue that needs to be fixed. The refrigeration and air-conditioning industry encompasses everything from the chilled goods on supermarket shelves to the air-con in hotels, and from dairy farm milk storage to commercial walk-in freezers. ATR Refrigeration Limited’s on-farm dairy work covers anything needed to keep the milk cold before it’s collected each day: milk vats, silos, glycol chillers, ice banks and so on. They install and service heavy industrial coolstores for clients like Makikihi Fries Limited, and run the maintenance schedules for clients like Oceania Dairy and New Zealand Pet Foods. But their specialty is designing the system in the first place that will do exactly what their clients need it to do. Having started his apprenticeship as an industrial engineer in 1991, Andy has clients that go back nearly 30 years, well before he started ATR Refrigeration Limited. They know from experience they will get value for money working with ATR, and can be confident of getting a sound, robust system that meets their needs, along with the 24/7 back-up that’s part and parcel of the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry. “They tell us what chilling capabilities they require for the manufacture or storage of their product, then I’ll design the system, we install it, and make it go,” says Andy. “We use local contractors we’ve been working with for 25 years or more for the pipework and bits and pieces, depending on the size of the job. “We give clients a turnkey package that includes the design, supply, install and commission of the plant. It’s ready to go when we hand it over, and then we do the maintenance.” ATR Refrigeration Limited specialises in walk-in cool rooms and freezer rooms, and undertook 27 in the last year alone, manufacturing them to do exactly what the client required. It could be to freeze deer velvet for the deer industry, or to keep goods chilled for the catering industry: they will manufacture a stand-alone unit ready to transport, or cut the insulation panels to size, build and install on-site to fit a precise space exactly where it’s needed. Andy enjoys both the challenge and the variety of work that ATR Refrigeration Limited does. “It’s rewarding when you design something for someone, give them the turnkey package and the client says thank you, it’s going well. I don’t have to worry about it, it just goes.” It’s the ideal response to a job well done and it’s why ATR Refrigeration Limited’s team of six, including two apprentices, could expand to 10 to cover the work available, although Andy would be more than happy if he could find even another one to join them.
