T T Karen Phelps “We have the experience and the equipment to take on a wide range of concrete work from standard foundations through to more intricate designs.” For GMR Foundations owner, Greg Richardson, a key focus is making things as straightforward as possible for clients. “We aim to provide a good service and make the whole process as stress-free as we can,” Greg says. “We take care of the details and make sure everything is organised from start to finish including plumbers, drainlayers and electricians as necessary.” Based in Prebbleton, the company provides a comprehensive foundation and concrete service, everything from formwork and reinforcing steel through to all inspection bookings and pouring all its own slabs to ensure a quality finish. Greg started GMR Foundations in 2023 after previously running a similar business and today brings around 20 years of industry experience to the company. He works alongside a team of four staff, and remains hands-on regularly working on the tools. “We can do anything really,” he says. “We have the experience and the equipment to take on a wide range of concrete work from standard foundations through to more intricate designs.” GMR Foundations constructs foundations for houses and commercial buildings with experience across TC1, TC2 and TC3 sites. It supplies and installs RibRaft foundations and floor slabs as well as standard NZS 3604 foundations, Allied SuperSlabs, TC3 re-levellable foundations and floor slabs and Type 2A and 2B surface structures. GMR Foundations has particular expertise in complex foundations, knowledge that has become increasingly valuable in Christchurch following the earthquakes, with the RibRaft system playing a key part. Made from polystyrene pods, steel reinforcing rods, plastic spacers and concrete, the system is designed to provide strong seismic performance. “As the foundation sits above the ground rather than being excavated into it, construction is relatively quick and straightforward,” Greg says. For TC3 sites, GMR Foundations can also install the Firth RibRaft® TC3 concrete slab, which is specifically designed for rebuilding on TC3-zoned land in Christchurch. The company also handles patios, pathways, driveways and retaining walls, essentially any concrete project. Its clients include builders, housing companies, construction companies, developers and homeowners. Working throughout Canterbury and further afield, one recent project took the company to the Marlborough Sounds where a house was being built on top of a hill with challenging access. The foundation incorporated columns and tie beams with intensified steelwork required to suit the land and design of the house and support steel I-beams above the slab. In Christchurch, the company recently completed units in Shirley featuring TC3 jackable slabs. The unusual design required oval forms within the foundations, prompting the team to develop a specialised shuttering system to construct them. “We enjoy the challenging jobs because they give us the opportunity to use our experience and find solutions,” says Greg. The company is currently working on a 420sqm house in Kaiapoi, two homes in West Melton and numerous other projects. Having its own equipment and plant allows GMR Foundations to manage projects efficiently and maintain control over the work. Greg aims to continue growing the business, maintaining the standards that have helped establish its reputation. “We’re a good team and we put out a good product, with good service to our customers,” he says. “The goal is to keep growing the business while continuing to deliver that same level of service.”
