As Central Otago’s primary industries continue to evolve, Sangster Electrical is providing support and expertise to help them along the way. For almost four decades, the Cromwell-based business has supported the region’s agricultural, horticultural, viticultural and industrial sectors, increasingly embracing technology and automation as it has evolved. Sangster Electrical was established by Duncan Sangster almost 40 years ago, with current owner, Jason Lee, joining the business in 2007. Jason has continued to grow the business to ensure clients are supported, while helping them keep up with new technology. A recent move to a larger workshop has allowed the team and business to continue to grow and develop. A key area of focus has been industrial process automation and controls, as businesses look for ways to improve efficiency and gain greater insight into their operations. Jason says companies and people are continually wanting their operations to be more efficient, so automation is a key factor to help them move in that direction. Operational and visual data also allows them to monitor and control their own system better, he says. That shift is reflected in the work currently coming through the business, with existing clients continuing to upgrade and develop across agriculture, horticulture and irrigation, while demand grows for systems designed to improve efficiency and support smarter operations. One recent project, which proved particularly rewarding for the team, involved the rebuild of a 5000-bottle-per-hour wine-bottling machine for one of Central Otago’s main bottling companies. The project featured a new Siemens PLC, new programme code, and SMC pneumatic control valves. “It was a massive challenge, but was an awesome project from start to finish,” Jason says. For Sangster Electrical, challenging projects are part of the appeal. “We love a challenge, anything outside of the norm, our happy place is outside of the domestic housing market,” he says. He adds that the team does still welcome domestic work. Their wide range of skills allows the business to cover a broad base within the electrical industry. Those skills range from writing complex PLC code and irrigation pump systems through to installing and repairing general electrical equipment and electronics. “The team is a massive strength behind the business,” says Jason. Overall, the team’s experience has taught the importance of being adaptable and flexible in the company’s approach to each project. As a result, Sangster Electrical prides itself on its ability to find creative solutions to complex problems. Now, as Central Otago continues to grow, Jason sees significant opportunities ahead, particularly as businesses look for technology that can address rising staffing costs and shortages. He says as the company plans for the future, he sees opportunities to also develop further within the area of industrial control and robotics. As the future of automation, controls and robotics remains strong, Sangster Electrical is working to ensure specialist solutions can be delivered locally and efficiently. “We can provide services that some only think are available from a big city company, [but] we like a challenge,” Jason says.
