Get in touch with your local Findex oce. Findex NZ Limited trading as Findex Helping power up the local community Plunket Electrical carried out the electrical and HVAC work on the first stage of the Event Centre, which has six indoor courts, a multi-use indoor artificial grass area, a large projection screen for multi-ball sports, and corporate and viewing areas overlooking Centennial Park. T T from page 58 Previously, all the town’s netball courts were outdoors, while basketball and other sports lacked enough courts in one location. With markings and equipment for basketball, netball, futsal, pickleball, badminton, and other activities, the new Event Centre can cater to a much wider range of events. Its location also strengthens Oamaru’s position as a tournament destination, sitting centrally between Timaru, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Central Otago. That regional connection reflects the way Plunket Electrical has built its own business, with branches in Oamaru and Timaru, and about 50 staff servicing residential, rural, commercial, and industrial customers. Established in Oamaru in 1942, the company has grown from a local electrical business into a multi-skilled operation spanning electrical, solar, heating, ventilation, data, security, and communications. The business has also been building capability in another rapidly changing area – solar. Ryan says electrification is the future, and solar has now reached a point where the economics are becoming increasingly attractive to homeowners and businesses. Plunket Electrical has developed a process that takes customers through their decision from assessment to installation and beyond. The team looks at the property, electricity use, bills, roof space, and likely generation, before designing a system around the customer rather than simply selling a set number of panels. Recent work includes a 110-kilowatt system with 280 panels installed on the Oamaru Club, where daytime generation can be used by its commercial kitchen, chillers, and operations, before surplus electricity is exported to the grid. Plunket Electrical also considers battery storage and off-grid systems, while assessing grid capacity before recommending larger installations. That practical approach is part of the company’s wider responsibility to its customers and region. The business’s strength, Ryan says, comes back to its people and the culture they have built around communication, support, and looking after each other. That culture is important as the company continues to invest in training and the next generation of electricians. A broad range of work gives staff opportunities to build skills across the industry, while staying connected to the communities where they live and work. “We’ve got good people, good capability, and we’re keen to keep building on that.”
