Lanark directors Donovan Isted and Rhys Turner are leading a Dunedin renovation business that has grown from a strong focus on bathrooms into whole-house renovations, maintenance, heating and multi-trade projects. Taking responsibility for the entire project is one of Lanark’s main points of difference, Rhys says. Plumbing, electrical and building work all form part of the service, with other specialist trades coordinated as required. “By handling the job from start to finish, rather than clients having to source their own sub-trades or project manage timelines, that’s probably our main point of difference.” With either Rhys or Donovan managing projects from beginning to end, trades can be scheduled around each other rather than working in isolation. That helps reduce delays and gives clients a single point of contact throughout the renovation. Lanark began with a strong focus on bathroom renovations but now regularly takes on kitchens, laundries and whole-house renovations. The business has also expanded into residential property maintenance, plumbing, electrical, building and heating services. Working in Dunedin’s older housing stock brings its own challenges, with every home presenting different layouts, construction methods and problems to solve. Lanark aims to provide clients with as complete a price as possible upfront rather than relying on numerous variations as a project progresses. “Older houses, every single one’s different. So, it’s a lot of problem-solving rather than assuming the same thing will work for every client.” Heating is another growing area for Lanark, including hot-water heat pumps, high-wall and floor-console heat pumps, and ducted systems. The focus is on helping customers understand the options and finding a solution that best suits the home and how it is used. The business currently employs eight people, with plumbing, electrical and building work all forming part of Lanark’s renovation and maintenance services. Lanark also works closely with a trusted network of other trades, including painters, flooring specialists, tilers and joinery installers, allowing projects to be coordinated smoothly from start to finish. That team approach extends beyond individual job descriptions. “We’re all working toward the same end result. There’s not really an attitude of ‘that’s not my job’. If someone can give another trade a hand and keep the project moving for the client, that’s what we do.” Lanark’s SiteWise Gold accreditation reflects the systems the business has put in place as it has grown, helping maintain consistent health and safety standards across projects and worksites. Much of the company’s growth has come from building ongoing relationships with clients, many of whom return for further renovation, heating, maintenance or upgrade work. The business has been operating since 2020 and has developed into a broader multi-trade renovation, maintenance and heating business serving Dunedin and the surrounding area. “Our goal isn’t to become a massive company. It’s to look after our clients, deliver work we’re proud of and enjoy what we’re doing.”
